2012 And the 7 Dimension End Time Prophecies

Imagine - Stephen Hawking, who some have called the "Einstein of Today," preaching in the inner city streets of London - wearing a sandwich board sign that proclaims, "Repent for the End is Near."

Does that sound unlikely to happen? Well maybe, considering that Mr. Hawking just wrote in his new book: "The Grand Design," - that the laws of physics really don't need a God to explain the creation (or the destruction) of the universe: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going" (Stephen Hawking).

However, many other scientists these days are taking more of a prophetic position when discussing 2012. There are presently 7 zealous groups (see below) preaching that the end of days will come in less than 26 months (December, 2012), and 5 of these groups - are from the scientific community.

7 Signs Predicting the End of Days in 2012

1. The Earth's Magnetic Field - Scientists predict that the earth's magnetic fields (north and south poles) that shield us from most of the sun's radiation will swap places in 2012, causing enough ultraviolet rays to kill everything that it touches (nasa.gov).

2. Sun Storms - Solar experts from around the world who monitor the sun are reporting that solar storms have recently been bombarding the earth with a lot of radiation energy that has been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. They are calculating that this activity will get worse and predict that it will reach its deadly peak in the year 2012 (nasa.gov).

3. Super Volcano - Scientists report that the Yellowstone National Park volcano in the United States is steadily building up pressure. It has a pattern of erupting every 700,000 years, and we are way overdue. Geologists are predicting its next Big Bang in 2012, will fill the atmosphere with ash, block the sun and plunge the earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 17,000 years (nasca.org).

4. The Atom Smasher - European Scientists are building the world's biggest particle accelerator designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the universe tick. Scientists around the world are predicting disastrous results when this machine is turned on for its first serious experiment in 2012. They believe that it could create mini black holes that would crush the earth into a super-dense blob the size of a watermelon (cbsnews.com).

5. The Physicists - Berkley University physicists have determined that the earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event, and they have calculated and predicted with a 99% certainty that we're all going to die in 2012 (millerinstitute.berkeley.edu).

6. The Mayan Calendar - The Mayans were the first to predict the end of the world on December 21, 2012. They were very good at building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone, and they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out - thousands of years ago. Some are saying that since they were able to calculate the lunar cycle - their end of the world prediction must also be right on target (usetoday.com).

7. The Bible - Some Christian groups are proclaiming that interpretations of the Book of Revelation predict the date for the final battle between good and evil (Armageddon), will be in 2012 (gnmagizine.org).

Since I do not have a scientific background, I will refer you to Mr. Hawking concerning the first five scientific prophecies. To be fare he was quoted as saying: "We're not saying there is no God, we're saying there is no need for God to explain the universe, and I agree with him on that. I will briefly comment on ancient religions and their apocalyptic predictions, but will save the commentary for the sixth reason for the Mayan archeologist experts. This article will primarily focus on ancient religious manuscripts including biblical scriptures in an attempt to answer the following two questions and will be divided into two parts:

Part 1: Is there any ancient evidence of a 7 - Dimensional God who will bring about the end of the world as we know it? and if so -
Part 2: What are the documented world conditions and time lines for this to happen?

PART ONE

7 Dimensional Background

As a foundation or prerequisite for this article, I would encourage you to read the 7 articles below that support a seven dimensional theory of everything:

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my previous articles, I would like to apologize in advance for offending anyone's religious sensitivities, as this is a work in progress that is very, very far from perfect, and I am fully aware of my biases toward Christianity. I would also like to say that this article is intended for those that do not believe in God or are confused about religion (16% of our 6 Billion-plus people on planet earth).

With the above disclaimer to being a Prophet of God (that even sounds silly as I write it) or having and/ or knowing the absolute truth, I would like to present what I believe to be the origins of ancient religious knowledge and ageless wisdom that give us some answers to how ancient civilizations viewed these questions. I would first like to focus on the most significant present day forms of religion and then consider their apocalyptic predictions regarding the end of the world.

7 Major Expressions of Ancient Religions and their 7 Dimensional Influences

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse," (The Bible, Romans 1:20).

It is clear from the above verse that God has revealed himself to all humans throughout history - even prior to the development of religions. Following are the 7 major forms of world religions that include 84% of the world's present population (World population was 6,871,111,449 on Sep 25, 2010) with some of their 7 Dimensional influences and apocalyptic predictions.

1. Ancient Mystery Religions: The 7 Days of Creation (Prehistory)
2. Judaism: The 7 Spirits of God (2000 B.C.)
3. Hinduism: The 7 Chakras (1500 B.C.)
4. Buddhism: The 7 Points of Proper Religion (523 B.C.)
5. Chinese Traditional Religions: The 7 Lucky Gods (270 B.C.)
6. Christianity: The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit (30 A.D.)
7. Islam: The 7 Heavens (610 A.D.)

Note: According to Adherents.com/ Religions, the "Nonreligious Group" (that includes - agnostic, atheist, secular humanist, and people answering no religious preference) make up - 16%. This is not a complete listing of all world religions as there are over 4,300 distinct faith groups covering all countries of the world.

Seven (7) Major Expressions of Ancient Religions and their Apocalyptic Predictions

1. Ancient Mystery Religions: Every twenty-six thousand years our solar system passes through the twelve zodiac signs. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Mayan, Hopi, Cherokee, and the Apache were aware of this great cycle and developed calendars according to it. Mayan cultures and civilizations were aware of this end date as December 21, 2012, and Nostradamus even prophesied about it (Esoteric Agenda Video).

2. Judaism: In Judaism the term "End of Days" is taken from the Tanakh, Numbers 24:4, as a reference to the Messianic era and the Jewish belief in the coming of Mashiach and the World to Come. The Dead Sea Scrolls identifies the Messiah as Melchizedek (Dead Sea Scrolls, 11Q13).

3. Hinduism: Ancient Hindus had a cyclic understanding of external history and internal
spirituality. The Cycle or "Kalpa", lasting 8.64 billion years in the terms of orthodox Hindus, illustrates the pattern of decline. The final is Kali Yuga or the Dark Age where civilization becomes spiritually degraded, human lives are shortened by violence and disease and there is a general state of decay in nature.

4. Buddhism: Like Hindus, Buddhists generally believe in a cycle of creation and destruction, of which the current epoch represents only the latest step.

5. Chinese Traditional Religions: The I Ching or Tao Te Ching or The Book of Change is fundamental to Chinese Religion. Researchers have studied the fascinating numerology behind the I Ching and were surprised to find that after graphing the beginning of life on our planet and the beginning of historical time, it fit perfectly over the timeline and in doing so, the end of the graph lined up upon December 22, 2012 (Explain 2012.com).

6. Christianity: In Christianity, the End Times are often depicted as a time of tribulation that precedes the Second Coming of the Christian "savior" or a "hoped-for deliverer", Jesus, the Christian Messiah, who will usher in the Kingdom of God and bring an end to suffering and evil.

7. Islam: In Islam,Yawm al-Qiyamah "the Day of Resurrection" or Yawm ad-Din "the Day of Judgement", Allah's final assessment of humanity, is preceded by the end of the world.

It's interesting that all 7 major expressions of the current religions that dominate our world today have scriptural evidence for the "End of Days." Eschatology is a part of theology that studies the final events in history, or the ultimate destiny of humanity, commonly referred to as the end of the world. Eschatological passages are found in many places, especially in the Bible's books of: Isaiah, Daniel, Matthew, and the Book of Revelation.

7 Dimensional Interpretation and the Book of Revelation

The book of Revelation is not rocket science - it is more complex. Over the centuries there have been numerous approaches to interpreting this book. Following are 7 of these views.

1. Preterist View: Holds that the contents of Revelation constitute a prophecy of events that were fulfilled in the first century.

2. Historicist View: Hold that the events predicted in the Bible have been taking place in history.

3. Futurist View: Assigns all or most of the prophecy to the future, shortly before the second coming of Christ; especially when interpreted in conjunction with Daniel, Isaiah 2:11-22, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-5:11, and other eschatological sections of the Bible.

4. Idealist View: Teaches that it is a symbolic representation of the continual struggle of good and evil. It does not refer to any particular historical events. It is applicable at any point in history (NIV: Commentary).

5. Eastern Orthodox View: The book is seen as a warning to be spiritually and morally ready for the end times, whenever they may come ("as a thief in the night"), but they will come at the time of God's choosing, not something that can be precipitated nor trivially deduced by mortals.

6. Esoterist View: The book bears multiple levels of meaning, the lowest being the literal or "dead-letter." They see the book as delivering both a series of warnings for humanity and a detailed account of internal, spiritual processes of the individual soul.

7. Multidimensional View: Just as Stephen Hawking's concept of the universe does not have just a single existence or history, I would propose that every possible interpretive approach listed above may exist simultaneously.

7 Directions of Prayer

Ancient Cherokee Indians didn't believe that there were just four directions (North, South, East, & West). Unlike the Abrahamic religious believers in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, who pray with their heads facing down or up, Cherokee indians pray to the 7 directions, the four cardinal points, the sky, the earth, and the center or spirit (cherokee-nc.com).

Before we jump into the book of Revelation, I would like to take this time to pray to our Creator in the seven directions for wisdom, guidance, and understanding.

Considering a 7 Dimensional God

The following verses from the New Testament and the Old Testament may give us some clues to consider the 7 Dimensional God (See: The 7 Dimensional God and Ancient Mystery Religion).

7 Dimensions and the Holy Trinity: God the father (7 Spirits of God: Isaiah 11:2), God the Son (Jesus's 7 Stars: Rev. 1:16), God the Holy Spirit (7 Gifts: Rom. 12:6-8)

The 7 Dimensional Lamb of God: Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth (Rev. 5:6). The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29).

Jesus's 7 Stars & the 7 Golden Lamp Stands: "In his right hand he (Jesus) held 7 stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance (Revelations 1:16). "The mystery of the 7 stars that you saw in my right hand and of the 7 golden lamp stands is this: The 7 stars are the angels of the 7 churches, and the 7 lamp stands are the 7 churches" (Revelations 1:20). The above verses indicate that Jesus is holding the 7 angels who are guarding the 7 churches in his right hand.

The 7 Spirits of God: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him--the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD (Isaiah 11:2).

Zechariah's Vision of the 7 Eyes & the 7 Lights: "See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are 7 eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,' says the LORD Almighty, 'and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day (Zechariah 3:9). "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a solid gold lamp-stand with a bowl at the top and 7 lights on it, with 7 channels to the lights.... 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty.... "(These 7 are the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the earth.)" Zechariah 4:2-10).

The following verses may give us some more clues to reveal who the 7 - Dimensional God is:

1. God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you,' (Exodus 22:13).

2. Jesus: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End,"(Revelation 22:13).

3. Melchizedek: "Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever (Hebrews 7:3).

4. Jesus: "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" (John 8:58).

5. In John 1:1-3, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."

6. In John 10:30, Jesus says that to see Him is to see the Father.

7. Later in John 14:7-9, Jesus adds that to know Him is to know the Father.

7 Messages to the 7 Churches: The Apostle John begins the book of Revelation by explaining how he received this message from God. Then he records specific revelations from Jesus (God) to the 7 churches.

7 Dimensions of Revelation: Seven (7) appears to have a special significance in this book: There are 7 churches symbolized by 7 lamp-stands (1:20); the churches have 7 angels symbolized by 7 stars (1:20); there are 7 spirits before the throne of God, symbolized by 7 lamps (4:5), and also by 7 horns and 7 eyes (5:6); the judgment scroll has 7 seals (5:1) with a corresponding set of 7 "seal judgments"; the 7th seal unleashes 7 "trumpet judgments," which are heralded by 7 angels (8:1-2); the 7th trumpet unleashes 7 "bowl judgments," where the bowls of God's wrath are poured out by 7 angels (15:1); there are 7 mysterious thunders about which John is not permitted to say anything (10:3); 7,000 people are killed in an earthquake (11:13); the dragon has 7 heads and 7 diadems on his heads (12:3); and the beast from the sea has 7 heads (13:1).

One half of 7, is also a conspicuous number in Revelation: two witnesses are given power to prophesy 1,260 days, or exactly 3 and 1 half years, according to the Hebrew year of 360 days (11:3); the witnesses are then killed, and their dead bodies lie in the streets of Jerusalem for 3 and 1 half days (11:9); the "woman clothed with the sun" is protected in the wilderness for 1,260 days, or 3 and 1 half years (12:6); Gentiles tread the holy city underfoot for 3 and 1 half years (11:2); and the beast is given authority to continue for 3 and 1 half years (13:5), (WIKIPEDIA).

Is there any ancient evidence of a 7 - Dimensional God who will bring about the end of the world as we know it? Considering the above verses, I will leave that up to you to decide, but I believe that there is sufficient evidence to support that Jesus the Christ, our High Priest in the Order of Melchizedek is our 7 - Dimensional God.

PART TWO

So, lets move on to question two. What are the documented world conditions and time lines for the end of the world as we know it or the Second Coming of Christ?

Considering this question at this point in history, we will be analyzing the "Futurist View" of interpreting the book of Revelation that assigns all or most of the prophecy to the future, shortly before the second coming of Christ; especially when interpreted in conjunction with the Bible's books of: Matthew, Daniel, Isaiah 2:11-22, 1 Thessalonians 4:15-5:11, and other eschatological sections of the Bible.

Matthew 24: 1 - 35 & the End Times World Conditions

The following verses in Matthew reveal what some of the world conditions will be at the time of Jesus's Second Coming.

Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains (Matthew 24: 4-8).

When will all this happen? (Ancient Hebrew & Babylonian Calendars)

In Hebrew Scriptures, the number 7 represents perfection and completeness; 7 X 70 equals 490-a number depicting "ultimate completion." It must be remembered that the entire Jewish system was designed under a system of sevens. There were seven days in a week, the seventh day being the Sabbath. Every seventh year was to be a Sabbath year when no crops were to be planted or harvested. After seven sets of seven years (or seven Sabbath years) the Israelites were to celebrate The Year of Jubilee.

Time - A Perfect Circle

In contrast to our calendar, a biblical or prophetic year is made up of 12 months each comprising 30 days to make a total of 360 days - the number of degrees in a circle. This biblical time system represents the mechanics of a perfect solar system. The earth revolves around the sun every 360 days and the moon revolves around the sun every 30 days. Biblical time is laid out for us in beauty and truth according to the mathematics and geometry of a Holy God (Genesis 7 & 8, and Revelation 12). Both the ancient Hebrews to whom Daniel was writing and the ancient Babylonians used a 360-day year calendar.

Daniel's Seventy "Sevens" & the End Time Calendar

Many Bible scholars believe that the prophet Daniel predicted the First and the Second Coming of Christ in the following verses.

Daniel 9:24-27: "Seventy 'Sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

Some bible scholars believe that the "decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem," occurred in 445 B.C. when the edict decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus was issued (Nehemiah 20), and that this event started the "seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens" or 69 sevens (483 biblical years). They believe that 69 of the 70 Sevens terminated when (Jesus) the Anointed One rode into Jerusalem on a donkey in 33 A.D. (Matthew 21: 1-4), predicting the First Coming of Christ as a political leader.

Many bible scholars interpret the "decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem," as occurring in 1948, when the modern nation of Israel was formed, and Jerusalem could again be rebuilt. With the threat of Terrorism affecting Israel and the whole world, they believe that Daniel's "time of trouble" has already arrived, but it will not fully manifest itself until the 7 year period of Tribulation begins (Daniel 12:1). When applied as years, the final 70 years in Daniel's Seven Seventies - yields the date: 2011 AD: (1948 + 70 = 2018 minus the 7 years of tribulation = 2011). Some consider adding approximately 12 months for the tribulation to begin to estimate the Second Coming of Christ as a political leader as being some time in the year 2012.

7 Jewish Festivals or Feasts of Israel (Prophetic Appointed Times)

The Hebrew word for "Feasts" translates into "Appointed Times" with God-at HIS Feasts (Lev. 23: 2, 4, 37 and 44). Many bible scholars believe that the following 7 annual Jewish Feasts or Holidays also represent prophetic time periods in history:

1. The Feast of Passover - represents Jesus's Crucifixion in 32 A.D.
2. The Feast of Unleavened Bread - represents Jesus's Burial in 32 A.D.
3. The Feast of First Fruits - represents Jesus's Resurrection in 32 A.D.
4. The Feast of Weeks - represents the beginning of the Church Age in 32 A.D.
5. The Feast of Trumpets - represents the present age - for gentiles to be evangelized.
6. The Feast of Atonement - represents the Day of Judgment.
7. The Feast of Tabernacles -represents the New Heavens and the New Earth, and begins the Year of Jubilee.

Some believe that the End Time events of the last three feasts will be based on the prophetic nature of these Jewish holidays found in the bible. Considering this time clock, we are presently in the Fifth Feast of Trumpets (time period) - awaiting the Day of Judgment.

The Year of Jubilee and the Sevens

"Count off seven sabbaths of years-seven times seven years-so that the seven sabbaths of years amount to a period of forty-nine years. Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his family property and each to his own clan (Leviticus 25:8 -10).

The Coming of Melchizedek as Messiah

Then the "Day of Atonement" shall follow after the tenth jubilee period, when he shall atone for all the Sons of Light, and the people who are predestined to Melchizedek. (...) upon them (...) For this is the time decreed for the "Year of Melchizedek`s favor", and by his might he will judge God's holy ones and so establish a righteous kingdom, as it is written about him in the Songs of David; "A godlike being has taken his place in the council of God; in the midst of divine beings he holds judgement" (Dead Sea Scrolls, 11Q13, Col.2).

Some bible scholars believe that the Year of Jubilee is also a prophetic appointed future time for the Messiah to return and take control of the earth. Some have calculated that the Seventh Millennium or tenth Jubilee technically began in September 1999, and that if you add 3 and 1/2 years to that - in 2012, we will be 3 & 1/2 years into the 7 Years of Great Tribulation (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:21).

Discussion

The purpose in writing this article is not to stimulate predictions and calculations about dates, but to warn us to be prepared for the real possibility of these predictions coming true.

Jesus said that, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father...... "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him (Matthew 24:36-44).

Although we will not know the exact day or hour, we should be able to forecast the signs of the times. Most "futurist view" bible scholars would agree that the end will not come until three more "End Time" events occur:

1. The False Prophet will appear as the world religious leader (Rev.13 1-10);
2. The Antichrist will appear as the world political leader (Rev. 19:20); and
3. The Abomination of Desolation will occur (Daniel 12:11, Matthew 24:15, Revelation 13:5).

I believe that our Lord Jesus Christ the 7-Dimensional God will return as the messiah in the Order of Melchizedek to fill the dual offices of King of Kings and Priest of God Most High.

I believe that 2012 will be a spiritual wake up call for humanity, but our God will not return until His people have prepared themselves to be a "Priesthood of Believers," a Holy Nation and a Royal Priesthood to receive him by practicing what he taught us concerning the "New Covenant." The Old Testament idea of the Levitical priest being the mediator between God and man was only necessary until the death of Jesus Christ.

So why do we continue to have Levitical type church leadership structures (Priest/ Parishioner, Clergy/ Laity, and Pastor/ Congregation)?

Why do we continue to have Levitical style worship in temples, cathedrals, and mega-church buildings?

Jesus came the First Time to reestablish the New Covenant in which ALL BELIEVERS are to become a Holy Nation and Royal Priesthood (1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 5:10). Christ, our High Priest has given us the ministry of mediation (Heb. 7:25) and He gives ALL BELIEVERS the right to become priests in the Order of Melchizedek.

Jesus came the First Time to move us away from Levitical style (temple/ church) leadership. He came to move us into the Melchizedek Priesthood where ALL BELIEVERS from every nation, tribe, people, language, culture, religious background, and gender (Jew, Gentile, Hindu, Chinese, Buddhist, Moslem, men and women, etc.) qualify to become the priests of their families and homes.

I think that Jesus will not come the Second Time until he sees evidence of HIS church practicing the New Covenant. The Great Multitude in white robes (Rev. 7:9) are a Royal Priesthood of families and a Holy Nation of homes from every nation, tribe, people, and language. The question is not when will these end time prophecies occur, but will you be one of these believers that have come out of the Great Tribulation (Rev. 7:14).

My intent in writing this article is not to persuade, influence, convince, or convert anyone to my personal beliefs, but to increase respect and religious tolerance for people of all nations and cultures.

The Humble Act of Gleaning Leads to Promotion

Gleaning is the act of collecting grain left by reapers in the field. It is the "leftover" grain that the gleaner is collecting, with gratitude. Gleaning is also the gathering of facts, laboriously, from various sources.

When you attach yourself to your God-given helpers and you glean from them, you gain spiritually from that source. You will have added knowledge in certain areas of your life. The bible tells us about Joshua, son of Nun, who attached himself to God's great Prophet, Moses. Joshua gleaned a lot from Moses and he succeeded him; he led the Israelites to cross the Jordan River. The Lord told Joshua, " I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses". Joshua 1:3

There was a woman, called Ruth, a Moabitess, and she was a widow. She was totally committed to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and she was ready to go wherever Naomi went. In spite of Ruth's grief and loneliness, she was determined to get back to work. She found herself gleaning in a field, which belonged to Boaz, a relative of her late father-in-law.

Ruth was very grateful for given the chance to glean and collect the leftover grain after the reapers. She was very appreciative and gleaned without grumbling. While gleaning, Ruth found favour in the eyes of Boaz.

He told her, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay with my servant girls. Watch the field where the men are harvesting and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled." Ruth 2:8-9

Wow! What a great favour! This is God's divine favour bestowed on Ruth, and she accepted it with gratitude. Even though she was a foreigner, Boaz was led to show her favour and God was glorified. ALLELUIA! When Ruth started working in the field, she did not ask for a posh position. She settled for the position of a gleaner and was very happy about this. Also she appreciated Boaz's favour towards her. This is great humility and unpretentious act.

Boaz even gave orders to the harvesters not to embarrass her but to leave some stalks for her to pick up. Ruth continued to glean until she was promoted to eating with the harvesters and she even had leftover. At the end of each day, she was able to take some food home to Naomi, her mother-in-law.

The favour Boaz showed to Ruth escalated when he married her. In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Boaz and Ruth had a son named Obed, who became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David, through whom Jesus came.

You can see that Ruth was promoted from the humble act of gleaning to being the great, great, great grandmother of our Lord Jesus Christ. What an honour and a great promotion!

Child of God, I encourage you to glean from those who have been put ahead of you, by God. It is a humbling act and you will experience divine favour and promotion in all that you do for the Lord. You are God's choicest instrument in the worst of times and you do not want to miss that opportunity.

Let the Holy Spirit direct you into whose "field" you can glean from. I encourage you to continue to walk with God and He will never mislead you. Instead, He will promote you beyond your expectations and you will be truly amazed. PEACE

Perhaps as a gesture of respect to Father Abraham, suggests Harel, for he would have performed his circumcisions with flint. Besides, iron, still rare in any case, would have become dull after only a few circumcisions and would have had to have been constantly sharpened. Flint was preferable for another reason, too: according to legend, at least, the stone contains a natural anti-biotic, highly useful for mass circumcisions! Women have been using cosmetics since the dawn of civilization. In antiquity, cosmetics were connected with cultic worship, and to appease the various gods fragrant ointments were applied to idols. Eventually this evolved into the custom of using cosmetics to improve a woman's looks.

Rebecca was a lovely young girl with perfect manners. In the Bible, Abraham sends his servant to Mesopotamia with orders to find a wife for his son Isaac among his former countrymen and relatives. After Rebecca draws water both for the servant and his camels, he becomes certain that she is the answer to a prayer. He bestows upon her a nose ring weighing over five grams, and two gold bracelets weighing even more (you can find out what they looked for in Gallery 5, which features jewelry from the same region and the same time period.)

So Rebecca begins her long voyage to Canaan, fully intending to look as beautiful as possible when she meets her future husband. Obviously, then, she needs cosmetics! To examine containers just like Rebecca's, head for the cosmetics and perfume display. Shaped like an animal, one of them has room for two kinds of eye shadow. The compartments would have been topped by two corks. Most interesting is the detachable head: when the top was lifted from the bottom it held a little make-up brush.

Strange looking clay statuettes in Gallery 9 are household gods that played an important role in the ancient world. After working for Laban for 20 years, Jacob took off for Canaan with his two wives, children and flocks. Laban spent three days hunting him down, frantic because someone in Jacob's household had stolen his idols (it was Rachel, and she sat on them so they wouldn't be discovered by her father).

Why did Rachel take them - and why were they so important to Laban? Harel explains that these small idols were believed to look after the household, and to intercede with the chief gods. But, he says, when their owner died, whoever possessed them apparently became the heir to the household. Rachel, no dummy, may have desired protection for their journey into Canaan. But she was also thinking about the future, perhaps, for she (and Leah) had bitterly - and rhetorically - asked Jacob: "Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father's estate? 5 Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us. . ." (Genesis 31:14-15).

Rachel's son Joseph, sold into slavery by his jealous half brothers, eventually became second in command to the Egyptian Pharaoh. When he died, at the age of 110, his brothers embalmed him and placed him into a casket suitable for upper class burial. It probably looked very much like the elaborate coffin in Gallery 9. Belonging to a man named Pheto, it is typical of coffins used for nobles and other aristocrats. Coffins of this sort were prepared in advance, filled with precious items for use in the next world, and covered with pictures. Look, especially, for two very large eyes. They belong to the god Horus, who was shaped like a falcon and had unusually keen eyesight.

As he contemplated his eternal resting place, the Egyptian would wonder how to keep robbers away after he died. Painting Horus onto the casket meant that even after death they would be able to see a potential thief - and to send him a message: "Watch out, for I see you! And when your turn comes, I'll get you for this!" In the walkway next to Gallery 9, you can view a headless statue of Ramses II. Possibly the Pharaoh of the Exodus, he was the greatest builder of his time. His name appears in hieroglyphics inside the engraved kartush or elipse that was only used for royalty, and related to the sun god Re. The sun was all important to the ancients, and the ellipse probably symbolizes its route. In the pagan world, beliefs and traditions were based on what people could actually see. Every morning they saw the sun seem to rise out of the earth, move into the sky, take a path through the sky, and at night return into the earth. The sun god Re is represented in many different forms including that of a scarab (dung beetle) which comes out of the earth, lives its life, ages, and enters the earth again in the evening. At midnight there is a fight between Re and a terrible snake named Apophis who threatens to kill the sun god. If he does, the sun won't shine! Now can understand what made the ninth plague such a terrifying catastrophe to the ancient Egyptians. Because an Egyptian who wakes up in the morning sees no sun, he knows that the snake has won and the world is in chaos. Should the darkness continue, with no sign that his world will return, the result would be country-wide panic and dismay. Did you know that David's first wife was Michal, and that he seems to have very much in love? She may have felt differently, however. On one occasion, the Philistines had just returned the Holy Ark, and as it was "entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart." [2 Samuel 6:16]

Could a stunning ivory on display at the museum - a window with a woman's disgusted face gazing outwards - be showing us how Michal felt about her husband's dancing? It was crafted in the Middle East and dates back to about 850 B.C.E.- not too long after David's rule! Or is it, actually, a representation of Jezebel who "painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window." (2 Kings 9:30).

A large, broken vessel, dating back to the sixth century B.C.E., stands on a ledge in Gallery 14. "King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. . ."[Jeremiah 37:21]

Perhaps used before the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem, and discovered among ruins of the city south of the Temple Mount, this jar could have carried wine, or oil - or flour for the bakers who baked the bread. The building in which it was found served as part of a royal administrative center, in the storage area. Its inscription reads "Belonging to the minister of. . . " Perhaps it belonged to the Minister of the Bakers. . .

During the First Temple period, Jews who passed away were generally buried in family caves, their bones later gathered into large pits. In the Roman era, however, a thousand years later, they were laid to rest in personal sarcophagi ("flesh eaters" in Greek) that they had often prepared before their deaths. One sarcophagus in Gallery 18 tells a fascinating story. An inscription in Aramaic, the language written by Jews of the period, reads, "Close this up, and don't put in anyone else!" The sarcophagus was prepared while the owner was still alive, yet it was forbidden to bury two people in the same casket. Therefore, suggests Harel, the owner must have been trying to get a message across to his wife - the only person who might insist on joining him despite the ban. So what he was really saying might have been this: "Wifey, I got enough of you while you were alive - after you die, find some other arrangement!"

Tsunami: Where was God?

The powerful tsunami that on Dec. 26, 2004, hit the lands in and surrounding the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the South China Sea caused terrible devastation and immediate loss of thousands of lives, followed by an aftermath in which tens of thousands more perished. The earthquake-triggered tsunami has prompted people all over the world to ask themselves and others, "Where was God when this happened? Did He fall asleep? Is He even real?"

Sometimes, what we call disasters is just a part of God's organization of nature; humans are merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Ecclesiastes 9:11-12, wise King Solomon observes:

The 12/26/04 tsunami seems to fall into this category. People were killed with no discrimination with regard to race, creed, class, or religion. If God had a purpose in the tsunami, it remains obscure to me.

You will hear some Christians deny that events happen by chance because they think that this means God has released His grip on the controls of the universe. But according to this passage, some disasters just happen. This is not because God has no control but because He has constructed the universe in such a way that an unbroken chain of causes and effects will take place according to the physical laws He has established unless He intervenes.

In the case of the tsunami, its cause was an extremely powerful undersea earthquake. The earthquake in turn was caused by the shifting of tectonic plates. The plates are all the building blocks of the earth's crust, designed to interact in this way. Earthquakes happen all over the world. Those that happen in or near the earth's oceans sometimes cause tsunamis.

Many Christians and Jews believe that such catastrophes are part of nature's participation in the Fall: as a result of the sin of Adam and Eve, the ground began to bear thorns instead of abundant produce, the pain of childbearing increased, work became toil, and death became the constant companion of humanity.

By extension, we could easily deduce that typhoons and tornadoes, mudslides and avalanches, earthquakes and tsunamis are all the result of the Fall--that the moral rebellion of the First Couple fractured the pre-Fall cosmic harmony. As Paul says in Romans 8:20: "Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it."

One way of explaining it is to compare the Fall to a broken gear in a printing press: the entire complicated system of interconnected gears, wheels, and pulleys has to be adjusted to allow for the missing teeth in one gear. So it is with the universe--it has been adjusted to our brokenness. It doesn't run as smoothly as it would have if human rebellion had not "thrown a monkey wrench" into the machinery of the cosmos.

As difficult as it is for us to accept emotionally, the Bible affirms that God sometimes causes natural disasters. In Isaiah 45:5 and 7, the LORD confronts Cyrus:

Cyrus was probably a Zoroastrian, believing in two gods--one called Ahura Mazda, who is perfectly good and brings blessings to the world, and his twin brother, Angra Mainyu or Ahriman, infinitely evil and bringing the world trouble. But the LORD God claims to be the sole deity of the universe.

Some disasters happen due to God's permissive will, as is the case with the calamities that befell Job (Job 1:18-19). Others come in response to God's positive command for the purpose of punishing the wicked and motivating people to repent.

In Amos 4:6-13, for example, the LORD explains His purpose in releasing one disaster after another upon Israel:

A similar thing happens in Revelation, chapters 8 and 9. The natural disasters pictured by the trumpets seem to stand for a wide range of ways that God can use to prompt the wicked to repent.

In this case, they stubbornly refuse: "The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood-idols that cannot see or hear or walk. Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts" (Rev. 9:20-21).

Sometimes, however, God's purpose is only to punish the wicked, as in the Great Flood (Gen. 6:13, 17) and the great hail God rained down on the Amorites (Josh. 10:11). In the bowls of wrath revealed in Revelation chapter 16, God makes no allowance for repentance.

Many scholars are convinced that John's vision symbolizes this by stating that no one is allowed into heaven's temple until the bowls of wrath have all been poured out, making it impossible to intercede and make atonement for the sinners (Rev. 15:8; compare Num. 16:46-50; 2 Sam. 24:15-25; Jer. 7:9-20).

When such punishing disasters take place, the righteous are sometimes spared, as in the case of several of the plagues against Egypt (Exod. 8:22-23; 9:3-7, 23-26; 10:22-23; 11:4-7; 12:12-13, 28-30). On other occasions, however, the righteous suffer right along with the wicked. Consider, for example, the Habakkuk's dialogue with God about the wicked among his people. In answer to Habakkuk's complaint, the LORD promises to send the Babylonians against his people (1:5-11). In response, the prophet asks (Hab. 1:13):

In vv. 14-16, Habakkuk says the wicked Babylonians catch and kill people like fishermen. It is like they gather nations in their dragnet; no one escapes. Then they celebrate and worship their "net" as a god. Then Habakkuk asks (v. 17), "Is he to keep on emptying his net, destroying nations without mercy?"

The answer comes back that God understands how wicked they are (2:1-19). He concludes with the reassuring affirmation: "The LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him" (2:20). In other words, God is saying, "Habakkuk, you're just going to have to trust Me on this one. Even though disasters happen that you don't understand, I'm still on the throne. I still rule the universe."

Habakkuk's response is commendable. After describing his fearful witnessing of the LORD's wrath, he recommits himself to trusting Him:

That's the kind of response we must have when we witness catastrophes like the tsunami of December 26, 2004. We can acknowledge that we don't understand why God would allow such a thing to happen, but at the same time recognize that we are so limited in our perspective compared to the Eternal One. He has proven Himself faithful over a thousand generations, and we can trust that He "does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).

The righteous can be sure of this: God has not forgotten them and has promised to guide all events--even horrendous natural disasters--for their ultimate good (Rom. 8:28-29). His purpose for us is to use the things that happen to us to transform us into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. If He accomplishes that, with our willing cooperation, anything else that happens to us is worth it. Paul reasons, "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18), and he writes this:

Nor is Paul only referring to persecutions; natural calamities fall within his scope, as his laundry list of sufferings in Second Corinthians 11:23-29 demonstrates.

The wicked have no such hope. If disaster overtakes them, they can only despair (Ps. 73:18-20; Isa. 57:20-21). If they survive, their grief over their losses can prove inconsolable (1 Thess. 4:13). Disasters that should draw them toward God may only harden their hearts as they resist the pull (see Exod. 8:15, 32; Rev. 9:20-21).

When we witness a disaster that falls on others, we should approach God in prayer on their behalf and do what we can to lend aid. When we experience one ourselves, we should run to Him for rescue, for aid, and for consolation. God can use a terrible disaster to bring about a wondrous good in someone's life. The cross is proof enough of that.

Biblical Years - Same As Years Today

Religion scoffers' favorite argument regarding Scriptural timing and ages is to quip: "Well, they counted years differently then." This is simply an "excuse" for unbelievers, as well as even some "doubting" Believers, and is convincingly refuted by scientific, historical, astronomical or atmospheric characteristics of the Sun or Planet Earth before and after The Great Flood. Our discussion will refute this scoffing by consulting common sense, elementary astronomy, Biblical history, including longevity of the Patriarchs before and after the Great Flood. This latter connects even with modern Earth's environmental conditions and Earth's prophesied future after Messiah arrives (Returns!).

Biblical scribes, in the Temperate Zone, were well acquainted with seasonal changes caused by "tilting" of Earth's rotational axis. They saw Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn, just as in our Temperate Zone today. In Biblical times, just as now, a "year" consisted of completing all four Seasons during 365.25 days. Biblical civilizations were agrarian societies. They planted at Spring and harvested in Autumn. No change there.

They saw both Summer and Winter solstices - if only by observing movement of the shadow of a stick placed vertical to Earth's surface. Of course, sundials probably were invented later. Nevertheless, our ancestors had various methods ("tools") for measuring hours of the day.

Much of skeptics' scoffing with this excuse of "different" years is spawned by Biblical statements of longevity of the Patriarchs. Longevity before The Flood is stated in Genesis Chapter 5. Their lives averaged above 900 years; e.g., 930 for Adam and the most for Methuselah at 969 years. A dramatic exception of course is Enoch, who lived 365 years. Although, Enoch was taken ("not found" - i.e., "raptured"), just before The Flood, because he "walked with God."

After The Flood (about 2450 B.C.E.), a steady, almost linear decline of longevity is seen through the centuries from Genesis Chapter 9 through the remainder of Genesis and until Deuteronomy 34:7 at about 1200 B.C.E., where Moses passes at age 120 years. Moses' successor, Joshua, passes at age 110 years (Joshua 24:29). Next, in King David's Psalm 90:10, we learn mankind's life expectancy shall be "threescore years and ten" = 70 years, "and if by strength they be fourscore years" = 80 years. - And, so mankind's longevity has stabilized for all these centuries -- UNTIL OF LATE!

People inquire: "How could men live so long before The Flood, but then have shorter lives afterward?" - The Sun gives life; however, solar radiation actually shortens our lives. Before The Flood, men were shielded from that deadly radiation by what we would now term a "Greenhouse Effect." - (Does this sound familiar?) -During the time between The Creation and The Flood, men's lives then were "shielded" from the solar radiation that would reduce their life spans later.

At this point, we need to recall evidence in Genesis 9:13-17. Here, God declared the sign of His covenant with Noah would be a "sign" in which: "I do set my bow in the cloud." The "bow" of course is what we call a "rainbow" and which men had never before seen. They had never seen bright Sunlight because that "Vapor Shield" covered the Earth until after The Flood. Bright Sunlight and a "cloud" of course are required to produce that "bow." This "sign" was then possible to produce because the vapor shield had been at least partially thinned, withdrawn or otherwise in a condition that permitted bright Sunlight, refracting colors through the clouds and displayed the first rainbow to men.

Gradual withdrawing that shielding vapor "shroud" around Earth is evidenced by steady decline in longevity after The Flood. For example, Noah, lived most of his life prior to The Flood, lived 950 years. Whereas, Noah's eldest son, Shem, lived mostly after The Flood and was given 600 years. Then, proceeding through ages of some of the patriarchs: Arphaxad = 428 years; Peleg = 239 years, Abraham = 175 years; Moses = 120 years; Joshua = 110 years. About 1500 years after The Flood (950 B.C.E.), we see both Kings David and Solomon reaching death at the prescribed "threescore years and ten" = 70 years. And so has average life expectancy been for mankind during the past 3000 years.

We inquire: "But, why then are men living longer lives in our time? - 80's -- 90's -- and even many live into their hundred's in many nations today." - Have we not been warned that Earth is soon going to be covered by a "Greenhouse Effect"? - Earth is warming. - Sea levels are rising. - Ice caps are retarding. -- There is explanation for this; although, many are not joyful to hear. Our "Vapor Shield" - along with "Global Warming" - is being restored, again shielding us from solar radiation. Of course, advanced medical technology, improved nutrition and other sources also have contributed.

We are approaching the Day of the Lord - The End of Days, etc. Life on Earth is in process of revision by Magnificent Proportions. Jesus (Mat. 24:8) referred to these times as "the beginnings of sorrows." - Earth will constitute a living Hell for seven years prior to His Coming. Recent Global Warming may in fact be heralding the period described in Isaiah 30:26, in that the Sun will be "sevenfold brighter" and the Moon "shall shine as the Sun." Talmud Rabbis write of this period as: "the time of Jacob's trouble." From Scripture, they KNOW it precedes arrival of their long-awaited Redeemer, Messiah, Son of David.

Nevertheless, Jesus will claim His Earthly Kingdom and shall reign for 1000 years. During those times, sin will not be tolerated and -- there will be no crime, wars, disease. Isaiah 65:20 states that righteous men will again live about 1000 years, as before The Flood, and a person 100 years of age will be considered a "child."

In conclusion, logical and scientific, environmental explanation has been provided to answer valid questions from "scoffers" and others doubting the lengthy ages reported for patriarchs in Genesis. Explanation derives simply as part of God's scheduling and changing of mankind's Earthly dominion, along with natural physical phenomena of Solar Radiation, "Greenhouse Effect" and other causes. There need be no more "excuses" for skepticism and doubt based upon alleged "unrealistic" ages for mankind in Biblical times. The ages are "realistic" when ancient physical and atmospheric conditions are compared with those same conditions today.

[Josh has taken a liking for Bessie, she works with her brother on the neighboring plantation; helps Josh with his two boys, and now Josh has created a song for her, he is wooing her, it would seem. She has come over to his shanty in the back of the Hightower house, by the carrel. They are now sitting on the little porch, in two rockers, and he is singing this song to her; Josh is not know to have ever been too romantic, in the past, or future, nor in the present, but he is here a little more balanced than in most previous episodes.]

Old Josh, in: Sweet Bessie Part II, 1849

Said Josh to his son Silas, sitting one evening on his front porch of his shanty, in back of the Hightower barn, "Bessie in a bad fix!"

"Why you say that pa?" asked Silas.

"She and her ex-husband Hank, be back in the woods fishin' down by Goose Creek, and they be comin' out through the ole road in the night, I sees with me own eyes, Sweet Bessie layin' cross the grass an' she say:

'Look here now, Hank, whut is hit youall wants?' and Hank is this kind of nigger, and he say 'Youall aint nothin' to-me,' and he had haul- off and slaped her in the face-I sees her face, and there she be, on the grass: I got a thinkin' he dont like her seein' me!"

"Then whut happened pa?" asked Silas.

"Well, Hank, he gits scared when he sees me, wants to run but he don't...he have a knife in his hand, and Sweet Bessie she callin' to the Lord to save her and me. She done tells the Lord, help Josh bite Hank to death, she say, 'Ef-in he lose his mind Lord, you got to take him, and puts him down yonder...!' She mad as a Billy-goat.

"Sho' -enough pa, she luck as the day is long, I reckon," commented Silas, listening like an owl for the conclusion, a corn-pipe in his mouth, just chewing on its end, no tobacco in it, and a jug of moonshine by his feet, ready to pop the cork, but too intrigued to do so in fear he might miss something his pa will say.

"Well, Silas," said Josh with a deep inhaling, "I done save her I reckon, and I am his omen to him now!"

"Why youall say that pa?" asked Silas.

"I done thought I knows women, but I finds out I aint known nothin' 'bout them, they is like sunshine and rain, every hour of the day, you got to keep your step and eye on them, and you gots to watch you' own step, cuz you inners dont tell you mind to stop, and youall ready to die fer a hug and kiss, and you know, the birds and the bees want a piece of the pie."

(Josh never did answer Silas original question, because he didn't want to tell Silas, he beat Hank up, and Bessie felt sorry for Hank, and she told Josh to go, and cared for Hank. And I think Josh felt a little foolish after that.)

Old Josh's Conversation with and Lula the Cook Part III, 1849

Old Josh and Lula the Cook, on the Hightower Plantation, in Ozark, Alabama, are talking about the relationship between Bessie and himself: Josh telling her, that it doesn't seem to be working out, and Lula implies Josh needs to getting a good woman, he's no spring chicken, matter of fact she says he is in his late forties, close to fifty (Lula, the black cook, assistant to Granny Mae, comes and helps out now and then, when Mrs. Ella A. T. Hightower requests it, often referred to by Aurea )...

"I hears the argument Josh," says Lula, "You and Ms Bessie fight-in all the time, an ole man like you, whuts got in to you both, shes a young one, half your age?"

"I aint no ole man yet, Lula," said Josh trying to think of an answer why he and Lula fight all the time.

"You think you owns Bessie, and her family comes to take her home, cuz you and Bessie do all that sugar-eyeing and kissin' and who knows whut, then fight-in like you are two devils, and her family wants her fresh for a rich man I suppse," commented Lula, shaking her head to the right and left, not up and down, and letting out a sigh.

"Supposen we do...all that whut you say, why her family git in our way, come her and takes her home, that aint their business, she old enough to say 'leaves me be,' but she dont." said Josh, head up in the sky as if picturing past events.

"Well Josh," said Lula, with a smirk, "youall got the advantage with that there tongue of yours, it aint got any shame, and Bessie, gits a no-good ex-husband, and a noisy family, but I cant blame her, cuz that there is all she gits to have besides you, and a few young men down there at that Ozark bar, you aint no price for no woman either Josh, so don't go thinking you is." Said Lula, adding "I like ya Josh, but likin' someone and livin' with the person you like, and is like you, is-well, I hates to say it, a nightmare. Its like jumping out of the chicken coup, into the frying pan, I jes' as well stay in the coup and wait for the slaughter to come, cuz I know it's a-comin'. So you see Josh, she aint git no better with our without ya..."

"Well, I reckon that is the way some folks think, I waz kind of wild, stubborn in my younger day Lula, had some bad ways, had to raise two boys, but I aint all that bad anymore." Said Josh, adding, "I hears Bessie's Hank, hes-a making bad remarks 'bout me being ole man, like youall say. He lives in New Orleans, and comes here and goes to the bar in Ozark, and has all them gals, and finds Bessie, I think Bessie and me, we loves each other."

"You is foolish Old Josh, she loves fire, and you is fire when there is no fire around, and when there is, you is jes' a candle in a window. She likes the fire in Hank, she jes' love fire, you is no more than an old horse in a barn to her," said Lula.

"How come you say that?" asked Josh, with a hurt look.

"I aint see why you fret 'bout her, I suppose you have changed, but she aint, and ef-in you chase her, you aint never goin' to keep up with her, her mama wants money for her, thats why she comes to fetch her," said Lula.

"Well," said Josh, a little disappointed, "You is right I suppose, but my heart say I loves her...!"

"No," said Lula, "I knows men, and that aint the heart talkin' cuz after you and her makes love, youall fight like the dickens for hours, that aint love, that there is wantin' to change someone, or control someone, who dont want what you want, but maybe jes't that fire, that there is all you both want, and afraid you cant have sittin' on your door steps when you wants it."

Josh didn't argue about it, he just up and left out the screen door in the back of the kitchen: I don't think he ever saw Bessie again, I think she left or New Orleans, shortly after that meeting between Josh and Lula, looking for more fire.

The Year set for these four sketches was 1849; all four sketches were made linking to one story in particular, sketch one was called, "I Aint No Nigger!" ((5-19-2006) (Episode No: 9)) this sketch was separated from the other four, and the year was changed to 1863 for the happening, and it was with Bessie Ann, not the original Bessie in Old Josh's Song to Bessie. Thus, the other three sketches were left alone as they fit more properly together. The first sketch "I Aint no Nigger," was not changed in content, just separated.

Havana, "The Heartless City," the birthplace of the Rough Riders, and the destruction of the Battleship Maine, 1898, the destructive floods of the 1920s, when oil drilling was reduced...

And where Ashley Walsh made her home, and where she died-1867-1929.

Night Waters off Havana

Part One

The Captain's cabin had a lower ceiling than average, especially for a huge man like Captain Ashton Tyron Peron, and every time he came through the doors he'd pert near hit his head, especially when drunk, forgetting it was so low. The heavy wooden floor inside and outside his cabin, was varnished, to a high glow. Ashley Walsh, remembered she was no more than seventeen years old when Rosalina, who owned one of the whorehouses in New Orleans, drugged her and sold her to the captain for $500-dollars, and she was kept for a year pretty much under lock and key in that cabin.

It was October 7, 1867, when she had paused, the captain this one early evening, the captain was somewhere, on board the ship, perhaps drinking with that negro banjo player, Wooden-leg Joe, they seemed to get along quite well, he was also a good helmsman the Captain told everyone (had she had to guess, it would be they were both at the helm, drinking rum or moonshine, hopefully, the ship would be steered by itself, to its destiny, often they'd get sidetracked because of their drunkenness and ended up in some local, they'd have to pull the map out to find out where exactly they were).

Anyhow,Ashley had paused, heard two drunken voices outside the cabin, she heard one of the rustic voices say, "You son of a snake, I get her first." Then the other man's voice replied, "You son of an American farmer and favored dog, I was here first."

Ashley could not see who was who, very well, as she peeked through the keyhole of the door. The men were separated by a distance of no more than three to four feet. Too close she thought for a pistol shootout.

"I'll give you money if you go away," said one of the two voices, drunken voices. It was as if they were beating each other's wings down, verbally, and hoping the other would get tired and just walk away, but in the meantime, they were pushing and shoving, harder and harder, at one another, it would just be a matter of time, thought Ashley before they busted down the door, and they'd then figure they could take turns on her, share her-at this juncture, they didn't want to do any sharing. They were getting so heated up; it was like two snakes biting their own tails.

"I'm going to give you some alligator sleep," boasted one of the voices, meaning he'd put him out right quickly, for a long spell if he didn't leave.

Ashley now could hear above the cabin, Wooden-leg Joe dragging his wooden leg along the deck, she was hoping he could hear the men, and would go tell the Captain.

The ship was on a course to the Port of Havana.

Then all of a sudden Captain Ashton Tyron Peron showed up looking at these two drunken sailors, sloppy drunk. He himself had had too many cups of rum, and wanted his woman, and they were in his way, plus he didn't cater to the idea, what was on their minds.

Peron simply lunged into both of them, ramming his fists into their faces, which bounced against the cabin door. He grabbed his dagger, stuck it into their cuts, and ribs, as they dropped and dribbled with blood collapsing-more like crashing, onto the shinny varnished floor, to unconsciousness.

The Captain then kicked the lifeless bodies to the side, stepping over them, paying them no more attention than he would do to the wax that made the floor shine. It was time for his pleasures.

That was the night Captain Peron would tell Ashley, he was going to drop her off at the dock-matter of fact, it was within a few hours of this most recent disparity, with his shipmates.

Delia's Inn

(Ashley Walsh, 1868)(Havana)) Part Two

When Ashley was set free by Captain Ashton Tyron Peron, after a year's incarceration in his cabin, a sex slave, she had found homage in Delia's Inn. Delia, was much like Rosalina, of New Orleans, she ran a whorehouse, a café, and rented out apartments as well, all in one building, on one corner of Havana. But this time Ashley Walsh was no longer-the foolish young girl she was eighteen months ago, she knew the ropes. After three months of working for Delia, she asked for a written contract for them to be partners, since she was the main attraction, young, still lovely to look at, shapely, and experienced, and even the notorious Judge Castro Montes, known as "The Grave Judge," took a liking for her. But Delia refused to sign the paper Ashley had drawn up, making them equal partners. Thus, she did something at the spur of the moment-perhaps remembering what Rosalina had done to her, Delia would sooner or later do to her again-by slipping her a Mickey Finn-and selling her to a ship's captain, and be in the same old dilemma she just had gotten out of three months past.

Consequently, she hit Delia over the head with an accordion that was lying in the corner of her room, belonged to one of the musicians, who couldn't pay for services rendered. When Delia awoke, she was tied to a chair.

"Now will you sign?" Ashley asked in a demanding tone.

"No," she said, "and when I get out of here, you'll be back on one of those filthy ships, doing what you know best," and she laughed.

Ashley pulled out of a drawer, a derringer Delia kept in her room for occasions that might demand its use, and she shot Delia in the thigh, and Delia screamed to the high heavens, likened to a dying cat. Ashley stepped back, she had never seen anyone in such pain, suffering, and out of some automatic impulse, the derringer having two separate chambers, for two bullets, she pulled the trigger again, and it penetrated Delia's chest, right through her heart, right out through the back of the chair, she was deader than a doornail.

Ashley was half asleep in her cell, it had a funny kind of smell to it, unknown-at first, but a decaying smell, then a reeking urine like smell-excrement, it was that of Delia. In her sleeping mind, she had asked "Haven't you started your intergalactic trip yet?" Funny things we say in our dreams.

Ashley drifted into a deeper dream like mode, in and out in and out of it she went, as if the nightmare demon was working overtime. She saw beggars holding out stump of rotten arms, great black worms with wings protruding out of Delia's Grave.

All these creatures, sleeping in their own filth; then she heard a voice, it woke her up. "Your name is?" asked a gentleman, standing by the iron bars of her cell, dressed in an expensive suite.

"I'm sorry, sir" said Ashley, dumbfounded, trying to regain her composure.

"I have passed your case onto the Judge, you know which one," he said, as if he was disturbed of the fact he had to be the judge's messenger.

She leaned forward onto the iron bars, thinking, 'The old evil judge, will want to get a lot of freebies for this.'

The vile and putrid smell had gone, but as she looked up onto the ceiling, she noticed someone had written, "I know we'll meet again some sunny day!" Then she yelled at the jailer, "Get me out of here," she could hear the patter of footsteps pacing her cell."

Drunken Laughter

(1869)(Kill Devil, at Delia's Inn) Part Three

Wood-leg Joe

Everyone said in Havana, Delia's Inn served a good drink, Kill Devil, they called it-also known as Jamaica Rum (fermented from sugar cane). When Ashley took over the establishment, she maintained its dutiful reputation.

The muddy streets of Havana, the night air, it was warm, someone was strumming on a banjo, and that someone was Wooden-leg Joe, from the ship 'The Peron,' which was anchored at the dock.

Everyone having left the ship, now on the dock area, were getting drunk, some already in a drunken stupor, laughing all about the dock area, peeing into the Caribbean, as if it was their humongous toilet, Captain Ashton Peron was on the dockside thinking of what brothel or gaming house he was going to brawl in, and take Joe with him, as often he did. It all was too familiar and too noisy for him-there, where he stood with a cup of rum in his hand, therefore they left the waterfront.

"How about Delia's Inn..." questioned Peron to Joe?

"They got a-hell of drink down there," commented Joe.

It was getting late, and it seemed they were gravitating towards the Inn, unconsciously, as they passed from street to street, shops were closing up, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, grocers, all closing up for the evening, and then lo and behold, they were standing outside the Inn.

Ashley had counterfeited Delia's signature onto a contract she had made up, before she killed her. After she had got out of jail, her friend the Judge, Castro Montes, helped make it all legal, knowing good and well, he'd be welcome in the Inn, free of charge to the last of his days on this earth. And the ownership was accepted with good grace.

Captain Ashton Peron had a deep and long scare on the right side of his forehead, an obvious proof of his past. He was aging, yet he still had some of that youthful steel in him, it hadn't gone.

When Wooden-leg Joe wasn't playing the banjo, he was a perfect helmsman, if not drunk. Now both standing inside Delia's Inn, he patted a waitress on the dairy air, "Get me some of that hard kicking Jamaica Rum!" And she went to fetch some. Then he spotted Ashley, of all things.

"Life is sweet," he said to Joe, as if Ashley was one of the Inn's whores, and expecting to take her as he had before. Joe was silent, frowning, He knew Ashley was known by everyone in Havana, even the notorious Judge Castro Montes, and Sir Godfrey, by her side, was no push over, and as Peron neared her, so did several larger men than him, none with aging slanting backs.

"So you found employment here, I see..." commented Peron.

"No, not necessarily, I own the place, and I think it is better you leave while you can."

"But life looks sweet for me here," he told her; Joe pulling on his coat jacket.

"When do you sail?" she asked, stern and steady, not with a ounce of fear.

"In two days time," he responded.

"Leave like bacon in the winter wind! I don't necessarily want revenge; I just don't want to see your face, ever again."

Joe kind of chuckled, it rhymed and Peron looked at him as if to say: what's so funny.

Leave here, and go find yourself some giggling women elsewhere. And surprisingly he did.

Sir Godfrey was nearby, said, "I can get a few men to do him in?"

"No," said Ashley, "Revenge or hate is like a snake biting his own tale, the only legal revenge with God is success. Can't you see in Peron's face how he hates me for who I've become?"

"Yaw," replied Sir Godfrey, "no bones in sympathy," thinking perhaps she held some kind of respect for the old Captain, and that she could not outgrow.

The Barrel Maker

((Judge Castro Montes Capitán Ashton Tyron Perón, Wooden-leg Joe and Pablo Llosa, the Barrel Maker) (1869, Havana)) Part Four

He was the barrel maker, who lived down the street from Delia's Inn, Havana, Cuba, Pablo Llosa, he made a good living off barrel making, for ships needing large quantities of water, Salt Pork, for long voyages.

Wooden-leg Joe, had remarked, perhaps in an ugly tone, the following morning, after they had been told to leave Delia's Inn, remarked at the barrel makers shop, commented in front of Pablo as Captain Ashton Tyron Peron was ordering barrels, who took what Joe had said in a fictitious kind of manner, with a salty kind of smile, "We ought not to try to get revenge off that girl, we got lots of sea to traveling to do, she's just trouble, we need to get these barrels onboard before she goes to her friends, and she's got plenty of them around here I hear." Joe meant no harm, he just knew the Captain well, and knew what was on his mind, what was annoying him, but it would have been better unsaid.

But he was hungry for Ashley Walsh in the worse way, mostly for blood, "I should have fed her to the sharks," said Peron, and Pablo Llosa started laughing. And in a blink of a red eye, Peron slit open the belly of Pablo, and stood and laughed as his slimy coil of intestines spilled out onto his hands, it was, thought Joe, the ugliest sight, he had ever seen, but what took place next was even more amplifying, Pablo had, for some odd reason, been standing with his hands and palms upward, as if he had a six sense, and had caught his guts before they fell onto the dirty floor which had no floor at all, just a dirt floor-and there he stood, strange and erect as a totem pole, holding his innards and all in place, and with one hand he shifted them over and onto the other, onto his forearm, and with the free hand he picked up an old Spanish metal armor plate, and as his wife came running, having seen everything from a window, out of the back where the shop was attached to the kitchen, she placed it around his midsection, tying it with a belt, and then Pablo picked up a sword, and was ready to fight the old Captain.

From that, Joe deduced, this was seriously to be taken as an omen, of an impending doom for the ship, "The Peron," and he verbally washed his hands of his friendship with the Captain.

Judge Castro Montes, had no time for omens, but he would be, Peron's omen, knowingly or not. Although renowned as a captain, stupid sometimes, and brutal, he ordered Peron to jail, and realizing the ship had no crew, that it was left anchored, and it had no real value for cargo, and it was an old brig, and it might serve a purpose, he set out an agreement, for Peron to take "You sign your ship over to Pablo, and you'll save the city a hanging, and feeding you in jail until that hanging takes place. And Pablo, will have more wood for more barrels, and can pay more taxes-somewhere along the line. And perhaps you can find your way off this island in twenty-four hours...because that's as long as you got before this agreement runs out."

There is no sense in getting into a lengthy statement on how Peron felt, it was obvious. He just wordlessly turned about, and walked away.

The Red-haired Dog

((Ashton Tyler Peron) (1927)) Part Five

Looking beyond the cobblestone streets of New Orleans, out into the Mississippi, Captain Ashton Tyler Peron, now ninety-seven years old, perhaps thinking of his old ship, being turn-up for barrel wood, and wondering how old Ashley Walsh was doing, simply looked out upon the river as if he was staring through a glass window, as he hobbled on his painful gout leg, his right leg, along the dock's edge. He had disregarded that year he kept her captive on his ship, only to admit, she was the prettiest Negress he had ever seen, or been with, it was perhaps why he couldn't feed her to the sharks.

His hair was nearly as thinned out, as a one year old baby's might be, fatter than a plump goose, and he had a bottle of red-haired dog in his left hand, a cane in his right, moseying along the dock way, a dark heavy long coat on, it was December, a black hat, taking a step at a time, drinking a gulp of the rum, at each pause.

He was blunt with God, likened to how he was with everyone; it was how he lived, choleric in temperament. He bent a little as his gout was hurting him, and he collapsed upon the top soil, next to the cemented walkway-as if he knew he was going to die. He died of dysentery, so the autopsy read.

Calamity with Composure

(Captain Ashton Tyler Peron; Judge Castro Montes; Ashley Walsh)(Havana, 1928)) Part Six

Ashley Walsh had lived in the shadows of a long shaking fever. It had killed several people from the docks of Havana every year. It was a dismal and scented evening. She walked the dock area, it was the summer of 1928, ghastly smells of the harbor lingered into her nostrils, dissipated throughout the pier area. It somewhat reminded her of those far-off days, when she was kept prisoner on Old Captain Peron's ship.

Dressed in light clothing, she went and had dinner in Sir Godfrey's mansion...as was her custom, she was now seventy-seven years old, and he was in his eighties. They had a light meal this day. (Godfrey, was at one time, nearly sixty-years ago, at one time the manservant to the Governor of Cuba, and through his dealings somehow acquired a small fortune, and a daughter, by Ashley Walsh, and not by wedlock rather by lust, for Ashley had no marriage view worth considering, but Godfrey nonetheless named her, Ashley Ann Walsh-Godfrey, not ashamed to give her his name, nor take his mother's name away. That was back in 1875, she would have been fifty-three years old now.)

"Were you aware," said Sir Godfrey, "Captain Ashton Tyler Peron had died a year ago?" (He had just found out for himself that very week.)

She drank some more of the wine; she was a hard woman, but not without emotions.

During her permanent status as a citizen of Cuba and resident of Havana, she became the busiest female Havana's natural harbor, a maritime hub, dealing with sugar, tobacco, coffee and rum sales, and running Delia's Inn, becoming one of the richest women in Havana, if not the whole Caribbean. No need to whore about anymore, although in the beginning, that is where she got her working assets.

She said, as if it was a passing thought, perhaps a dutiful idiom, "He helped make me what, or is it that, I am today, rich, I figured if that dumb clucks can own a ship, why can't I own a business, and make that plural?"

"Well, he sure did hang around with an unruly lot!" said Sir Godfrey.

The room fell silent.

"Murder, I was clumsy at it, I had an ugly old man do it for me, kill a bulky old man called Josh, I was only in my teens then, that is my most hideous crime, well almost, Delia's death included; my second crime, suffocation of my youth that one year in New Orleans, when I was a whore, but even Rosalina the once queen-bee of whore of the city, taught me."

Godfrey pretended to listen, but did not raise his eyes. "I was never a wife though," she added to her comments. "I was hardly fourteen when I slept with a man named Silas; I love him so very much, simple as he was, back in Ozark, Alabama on the Hightower Plantation, I loved him, I really did, I'm sure he's dead by now."

She stood up, walked out of the room, knowing good and well, she could say and do nearly whatever she wanted to, she had become rich enough. She also knew from experience, when you run out of money, you run out of friends, from that you make your priorities, depending on your needs, and in Havana, a single minded woman, needed both.

Ashley Ann Walsh Godfrey would have been fifty-three years old, in 1928, had she not died in 1887, at twelve years old; this day in 1928, her mother, Miss Ashley Walsh, in pacing in Sir Godfrey's garden. Nothing could have prepared her for that shocking day of her daughter's death, over forty years ago, but you would not have guessed it, by her equanimity at the time.

In the capital city of Cuba, law and order in 1887 was bleak at best, there was a constant drag on it, in the city of Havana, vagabonds, ill-mannered hoodlums, doing nearly everything as they pleased, everywhere, whenever, pert near right out in the open. It was Ashley Ann on her way home from school, when one old man, vulgar and drunk chased her into an alley; a pretty girl, a favorite in her class.

He had cornered her, now vomiting in the alley...two men brawling fifty-yards away, disorderly at every corner, at every nook; all cut-throats, seamen for the most part.

Who could be blamed for Ashley Ann's rape and murder that day? To have her mother watch the kid, day and night was a second duty, and not fashionable for her, she never did, she never would have, consequently, anyone dare ask.

She was busy increasing her numbers and wealth, while the city of Havana, also got richer and richer. Gold, and goods, commerce was thriving, as was her Inn, while the natives were getting more hostile: ultimately, a person only has 100% of themselves to give-to any one thing, or several things however one wishes to slice up the pie of life, their life, no matter which way you slice it though, there still is only 100% of you, and there is no more. To Ashley these were the hard facts of life in Havana; she gave 99% of her life to what she valued -, respect, power, money, the high of the buying and selling and again I must add Delia's Inn, and that one percent left, she gave to her daughter, and that was only a half percent actually, because her lover, Sir Godfrey, got the other half of the one percent. That's how it was.

Sir Godfrey, on that scornful day (her father) had cried out to Ashley-his mistress for forty-years, "Your daughter is with God in Heaven now!"

"Yes," she remarked, "let her be with Him, it's too damn hostile down here for her anyhow."

Night Waters of the Caribbean

Solomon/Ecclesiastes

As the population increased in Havana-as it had on the other Caribbean islands such as: Jamaica, Port Royal, Saint Domingo, Hispaniola, and San Juan (Puerto Rico), everyone firmly having enough to eat, Ashley Walsh recalled (at least in the past), now sitting on a bench, looking out onto the night waters of the Caribbean-at a pretty twilight-so had the islands hostilities. Far to the left-but not too far, were three seamen, gawking at her; she glanced their way, whispered, but the wind carried the whisper, "They're no different than sewer rats."

The looks on their faces went berserk!

If the hands of Ashley Walsh had known what her mind was thinking, they would have wanted to be cut-off.

The consequence, and sequence, of a crowding city-perhaps not much different than a tree with its uncountable leaves, having to shed them to make room for more, one might conclude, as this being Havana, had its share of outbreaks, street fighting, domestic violence, child abuse, soaring infant mortality, psychosis, increased homosexuality, and hyper-sexuality, alienation, disorientation among the older public, ruthlessness, Black Sunday rippled through the United States and over onto the Caribbean Islands, commerce declined, as did skills (in 1929).

Among the tenant housing, remorseless fighting, squalling. People were living like cats and dogs, and some like rats, dominated and aggressive ones, and the most normal humans of Havana went berserk because of this.

Homosexuals made advances on juveniles of both sexes. All tolerated by the city's officials. The city with its own crowded population, became hyperactive, hypersexual, bisexual, and in some cases cannibalistic. Hence, as the population increased, so did this unusual behavior, well, not all that unusual, although it was never far-off, and Ashley knew this, she looked to her left again, she knew this-now seventy-eight years old, there were now five fellow seamen grouped some twenty-feet from here, they crept up like bowlegged quails, she thought. Old Ashley Walsh just absorbed, and observed twilight, narrow it became, and then the five men had mustard-up enough courage, and energy, to do what they were thinking, not knowing what Ashley was thinking, she always had plan B. The old stone wall she was now sitting on, hands firm, palms down on the wall to her side, she simply gave herself a push with those two hands, and over she went, into the twilight waters of the Caribbean.

I plugged Drake Bell's July 4th Concert on the Radio

This morning I called the most popular radio station in the Bay Area, CA and plugged Drake Bell's Lemoore, CA July 4th concert. I couldn't get the greatest sound quality, but you can still understand most of it and still so COOL!!! Bill and Marla, radio DJs on Mix 106.5, were talking about Brad Pitt wearing ascots and asked if anyone knew of anyone who wears them and of course I immediately called and talked about Drake Bell and at the 2:47 mark I totally plugged Drake's Lemoore, CA July 4th concert! Yippee!!! (When Bill says, "It's 57," he means 7:57 AM) One of the things I talked about was Drake's ascot and being on Regis and Kelly and that Regis commented on it and loved it. I wish I had said it was a couple of years ago, letting them know Drake did it way before Brad Pitt and Justin Long. I mean maybe thats where they got the idea, hehe. Later on in the show they said GQ magazine is fond of the ascot worn properly, including saying it shows a certain bravery, only brave men wear ascots. Also that an online poll said 72% of women say the ascot is hot! And later someone else said that ascots are available at Target, hehe. At one point, the 2:35 mark, my son did a silly yell during my recording of the radio station in case you hear it and wondered. Please let me know what you guys think!

The CSUN men's basketball team defeated the 49ers 100-61 in a game that was televised on Fox Sports Prime. Five Matadors scored in double-figures, led by Deon Tresvant's 19. Jayme Miller had a career-high 18 points along with 9 rebounds. Calvin Chitwood had 14 points and 7 rebounds in his first game back from a high ankle sprain that cost him two games. Josh Jenkins was once more magnificent at the point, scoring 9 and dishing out 11 assists. Paul Wayne backed up Jenkins with 3 assists and 4 steals. Jonathan Heard had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Tremaine Townsend had 12 points and 8 rebounds after missing the last game. Walk-on guard Rai Colston came in during the final minutes and scored with 12 seconds left to get CSUN to the 100 point mark for the first time this season.

God CAN, WILL, & DOES fill he emptiness inside & can make you WHOLE! Too often, people take their own lives because of depression. This is just awful. I think at some point in everyone's life they feel depression, but for others it can drag on for years. Some people have medical problems like bipolar depression that makes life hard to bear, or others become depressed from life's issues. In Ecclesiastes Solomon talks about the meaninglessness of life, the only meaning in this life & time & the universe is GOD. If we have God everything in his life is to be ENJOYED:)!!!!!!! Don't lose the unseen battle, give on marching on thrugh life & don't let the evil forces keep you from God's eternal bliss! "Where do we all go when we commit suicide?" he asked his Christian Professor, at the Christian University, in Alabama, "is it the unpardonable sin?" he added, making it his second question.

Then the old professor, pushed his papers aside laying on his desk, stood up, erect and left his desk area, looked out the window, up into the stars, or so it seemed to the Professor's student, Gene, but it was really more toward the upper part of a huge tree outside his window.

There the professor gazed, stoned faced almost, concentrating on the shapes and the shadows that seemed to drift about. It was only a first floor office, a window you could jump out of, and if you fell, you'd only get a headache-if even that, I mean it was but four-feet down, a short fall at best, safe to leave open for the suicide student, had anyone been there but those two, and there was nobody but those two.

Then the old man, the professor brought his Alabama-eyes down from up high, as if he was following a bird down the torso of the big tree, he was actually staring at the solid, huge oak, outside the window, with its snake like, thick anaconda branches, and its trunk, outwardly as big as the pillars at the Lincoln Monument, in Washington D.C.

At the same time, from the corner of his eye, the long part of his eye, he watched the wrapping on the student's wrist, soak up with blood, saw it drip on down Gene's pants legs.

It was dusk, and he had worked late, and like out of the blue, Gene had just stopped in, Gene Furbelow; just like that he showed up at the professor's office on campus, and had asked those two questions. Perhaps thinking after slicing his writs, where he was headed for, possibly had second thoughts, I don't know but maybe he wanted the good professor to talk him out of his sudden suicide attempt, to save him mentally and then physically, whatever the long course of action was, he was there and waiting for his questions to be answered.

The old professor pointed up into the thick branches of the tree, full of green life, dark green life with black charcoal branches, lit up by the street lights nearby, as if the tree itself was hooked-electrically plugged into some nearby socket, and the leaves were liken to lit up Christmas bulbs; it was as if the tree was alive, had some kind of human like existence circling around it, an existence the professor personified or perchance the professor gave his living substance to, so it would enhance the tree to give such an impression, it would seem he was almost part of the tree himself.

Then after another moment, it was all darkened with the blackish-blue evening of the atmosphere, another transition had taken place-or so it appeared, a transition more on the order of, a sudden deadly virus was creeping in, with this at hand, something else was mysterious, or brought to light:

"What do you think it is?" asked the old man, pointing at the tree, the shadows in the tree, their shapes.

"Is this a trick question, are you trying to imply something?" Gene asked the professor.

"I shall go further than a man should go in his trade," said the professor of theology, Professor Backer, then noticing blood dripping from Gene's writs profusely, said, "Well, well, well, what have we here...?" As if he didn't notice, notice to its full extent, but he really did.

Gene's bandages were completely soaked with blood, as was his right side of his pants, from his hip to his knee, he had laid his wrist and hand against that leg.

Gene had tied a white hanky around his wrist before he came in to see the professor, as the dialogue went on, Gene never moved from his chair, just moved his hand about now and then.

"I'll give you $100-dollars worth of advice," said the professor, it was what he got for an hours worth of work (in 1991). Gene just stood listening, it was why he came, for advice to get his questions answered. The professor then called his wife, told her he'd not be home for dinner, and left it short, with no details.

The professor had sat down for a moment now, then he stood back up, neatly dressed he paced the floor, looking at Gene, deliberating (so Gene thought) waiting for his two questions, unanswered questions to be answered, thinking at any minute they would be, and therefore gave his wrist no attention, no thought, actually forgot about his suicide attempt for the moment, and forgot about his pants being soaked with blood, even forgot about the blood now dripping down from his pants to his socks- the textiles sucking up the blood like a sponge; from there underneath the cloth, it dribbled down onto his feet, and in-between his toes, but he felt nothing just anticipation for the good professor to answer his questions, all the time the professor looking at the blood oozing out, almost mesmerizing the boy, almost putting him into a spell, not sympathizing with the student one iota.

The professor stood by the window again, breathed in the cool evening air,

"Heaven has fallen upon you, but Hell wants you, both are seeping up out of your veins like blood..." he said, Gene just kept staring at the professor, staring at the shadows he was staring at, the tree with the shadows therein, he had pointed to before, those same shadows.

He stepped out now, out through the window and beyond it-the professor, it seemed so easy for him to do, like he almost floated out of it, no pain in them old legs; Gene just looked, surely he was thinking: now is the time he was going to let him know the answers to his questions, perhaps an analogy, something cleaver, tricky, philosophical, for the professor was known to be a poet, philosopher of sorts: hence, perhaps a comparison, a simile he'd give to Gene, but Gene did not move from the chair, by the professor's desk, just looked from there out through the window, over the window sill, where the professor had stood and climbed out of, hands now laying by his side as if he had lost weight, from all the blood dripping out of his body from his wrists, head leaning backward, beyond the support of the chair, awkward, looking at the professor, by the tree, he was just a shadow now, as he continued bleeding, almost traumatized from the absence of blood.

A voice said, "Heaven or Hell," Gene looked for the whereabouts of the voice, he could not see the professor anymore, but it was talking to him, the voice of the professor, addressing him.

There were now shadows and shapes all around the professor, but he paid little heed to them, he moved around the tree, as if he was searching for someone, in particular, or something.

He spotted Mr. Thomas John Little, "...say Mr. Little, when that man took your wife and you committed suicide, did that ease your mind, diminish your pain?"

"Yessum" said the Negro then added "but not fer very long, now I is in-between heaven and hell, like all us ghouls here at this ole tree."

And he looked at Gene, smiling at the professor, as if he could read his mind, as if to say, 'I'm dying....'

"Stay here, I will not be long," the professor told the ghoul, and walked over to the window, grabbed Gene by the wrist, the one that was still dripping out blood, to the point he had weakened himself to a half dead cockroach: pulling him over to the tree as if to show the ghouls a prize, he said with enthusiasm:

"Here, you have a guest; he will be joining you in a few minutes," then looking at Gene, his wrist, said with a smile,

"...they'll answer your questions in a moment, they know better than I..." and shoved him down against the tree. Immediately, a swarm of shadows and shapes bound Gene with as much wind and residue as they could to keep him in place.

"I want to go to the hospital," cried Gene, "I have had second thoughts on this matter that is why I came to you, professor, but you are not my salvation, rather you are my doom."

"It is so true," said he professor, "you either take charge of your life, or someone else will, it is so simple, it is called, self-interest, which is more powerful than the devil himself."

The boy just looked stunned, as if to say: now what!

Said the professor, "Sometimes my son, we ask for things we shouldn't, and when we get them, we regret we ever asked for them; my advice to you is this: count the cost before you act."

The professor now cheerfully walked away, was now climbing back through his window, he never turned around again, but he did say something that echoed back to Gene, "It won't be long now, just hang in there kid, and you'll have your answers to your questions...!" and the kid died, and he got his questions answered, but it wasn't by the professor.

Cielo del Suicidio

El viejo profesor, empujo sus papeles a un lado, dejo el área de su escritorio, miro fuera de la ventana, arriba en las escaleras, o eso le pareció a Gene; fuera de la ventana abierta el miro de reojo, encarado casi endurecido, concentrado en las formas y las sombras, eso parecía vagar alrededor. Era solo una oficina en el primer piso, una ventana por la que tú podías saltar afuera, y si caías, solamente podrías conseguir un dolor de cabeza, estaba solo a pocos pies para descolgarse. Luego el viejo hombre concentro su mirada desde lo alto, como si el estuviera siguiendo a un pájaro abajo hacia un árbol grande, y ahora el estaba mirando fijamente el sólido, y enorme roble, fuera de la ventana, con sus ramas gruesas como la serpiente anaconda, y su tronco tan grande como los pilares del monumento a Lincoln, en Washington D.C.

Al mismo tiempo, desde el rabillo de su ojo, la gran parte de su ojo, el vio la venda, absorbiendo con sangre comenzando a gotear sobre el pantalón corto de Gene, atados alrededor de la muñeca del estudiante.

Era el atardecer, y el había trabajado hasta tarde, y como por arte de magia, Gene se había detenido allí, Gene alterado, justo así el apareció en la oficina del profesor en el campus.

El viejo profesor señalo dentro de las ramas gruesas del árbol, lleno de vida verde; verde oscura vida con ramas negras como el carbón, enganchados a esto como bombas navideñas; era como si el árbol estuviera vivo, mas allá de su normal existencia: todo esto estaba oscurecido con la ennegrecida -tarde azul de la atmósfera. Pero algo más estaba allí.

¿"Que piensas tu que es?" pregunto el viejo hombre, todavía apuntando hacia el árbol, las sombras en el árbol, sus formas.

Artimañas

"esta es una pregunta con segundas, ¿estas tratando de insinuar algo?" pregunto Gene, al profesor.
"Iré mas lejos de lo que un hombre iría en su tratado", dijo el profesor de teología (profesor Backer). "Bien, bien, bien", dijo el profesor mirando la sangre goteando de la muñeca de Gene, ahora su vendaje completamente empapado, como estaba también el lado derecho de sus pantalones por su rodilla. Gene había atado un pañuelo blanco alrededor de su muñeca antes de venir para ver al profesor. Gene no se movió de la silla.

"Te cobraré el precio de $100 dólares por el consejo" dijo el profesor, esto era el precio que él conseguía por una hora de trabajo en (1991). Gene solo permaneció escuchando, para esto era por lo que el había ido allí, para conseguir respuesta a sus dos preguntas. El profesor luego llamó a su esposa, le dijo que el no iría a casa para la cena, y dejo esto, sin mayor detalle.

El profesor se había sentado por un momento, ahora se apoyó atrás, cuidadosamente vestido, dio pasos por el piso, mirando a Gene, deliberadamente (entonces Gene pensó) acerca de sus dos preguntas aun no contestadas, pensando en todo momento lo que podrían ser; y así, no dando a su muñeca ninguna atención, ni a sus pantalones remojados: la sangre ahora goteando abajo a sus medias y mojándolas; y ahogando sus pies, mientras estaba siendo absorbida dentro de su zapato.

El dio un paso hacia fuera ahora, afuera a través de la ventana y mas allá de esto- el profesor, parecía tan fácil para él hacerlo, como si casi flotara fuera de esto, sin dolor en sus viejas piernas; Gene solo miraba, seguramente el estaba pensando: ahora es el tiempo en que él le dejaría conocer las respuestas a sus preguntas, talvez una analogía. El profesor era como un poeta, filosofo: de ahí, talvez una comparación, similitud. Gene no se movió desde el marco de la ventana, el permaneció allí, sus manos reposadas sobre el marco su peso sobre sus muñecas, su cabeza dirigida hacia fuera, mirando al profesor, sus muñecas sangrantes siendo traumatizadas.

Una voz dijo, "Cielo o infierno", Gene miro de donde salía la voz, el no podía ver, pero estaba hablando al profesor, dirigiéndose a él.

Hubo ahora sombras y formas todo alrededor del profesor, pero el presto poca atención a estos, el se movió alrededor del árbol, como si el estuviera buscando a alguien, o cosa.

El pudo ver al Sr. Johnlittle, "diga señor Little, cuando este hombre se llevó a tu esposa y tu cometiste suicidio, ¿Eso facilita tus sentimientos, tu dolor?

"Si, totalmente", dijo él, luego agregó "Pero no por mucho, ahora yo estoy entre el cielo y el infierno, como todos nuestras fantasmas. Y el miro a Gene, sonrió al profesor, como si el podría leer su mente, como diciendo: otro suicidio.

New trial for Patrick Wollett?

The family of a man who was killed wants the man convicted in their son's death to receive a new trial. Patrick Wollett, 20-years-old, was convicted of first degree murder back in June. He was one of two men found responsible for killing 36-year-old Joshua Houlgate on December 6th of 2007. On Friday, Wollett was back in court. His attorney was asking the judge for a new trial. It was a gruesome scene more than 2 years ago. Houlgate was beaten, shot and killed. Tom McCormick, Wollett's Attorney, said, "There should have been various experts that should have been consulted in this case that may have turned the case around. " Wollett sat quietly with his new attorney by his side and his former attorney testifying against him on the stand. His new attorney claims he was not well represented. What's shocking, Houlgate's family agrees. Houlgate's father talked with KSBY by phone. He said he felt Wollett did not receive an adequate defense. As to whether Wollett's guilty of his son's death, Houlgate's father stated he'll reserve judgement until the matter is settled. Meanwhile, Greg Jacobson, Wollett's former attorney, defended his actions. One argument made was that Wollett never took the stand during the trial. Jacobson said he believed Wollett testifying would destroy the case because Wollett kept changing his story. Krav Maga - Not Real Pretty But Real

Jason Mark is a cop. You need a sense of humor to make it as a cop, and Jason's a funny guy. Most likely he'd chuckle at your "Bad Cop! No Doughnut!" bumper sticker, maybe ask you for a bagel instead. And you can dump the stereotypes; watch what Jason does in his spare time and you might realize that not only is this gym-rat in better shape you'll ever be, he's a martial arts expert capable of kicking your butt twenty which-ways-to-Sunday and you might even feel stupid for having that bumper sticker in the first place.

Thursday, 8pm, Penn Oaks Fitness Center: Nearly a dozen men and women, attired in sweats and tees, hands taped and alternately holding striking pads, whale away at each other with fists and feet, the scene overlaid with the throb of a heavy-metal CD. They're sweating and panting, since Jason just had them doing pushups and crunches. Now he charges about amongst them excited as a bulldog set loose in a Chihuahua parade, yelling, prodding, shoving: "What was that, Kevin? You call that a punch? I kiss harder 'n that! Put some shoulder into it! This is a punch-" he slams a hand into the mitt and the guy holding it stumbles backward. "And this is an elbow-" Wham! The guy stumbles back further. "See, that works too! Use everything you got. And whatever you do, don't stop. If you stop, you're dead..." Moments later he's demonstrating escape from an up-against-the-wall strangle: "J-move...one arm up, turn and dip...good, Sue...ok, Steve's tall...whatcha gonna do? Right -go in low! Make him a soprano..."

Let's get something straight: Krav Maga ("krahv magah" or "Contact Combat") is as ugly as it sounds. The official fighting system of the Israeli Defense Forces isn't concerned with aesthetics. It's designed to be simple and efficient, of necessity, brutal, nasty. All the stuff you're not allowed to do in the other martial arts- groin kicks, eye gouges, elbows to the throat, aren't only encouraged in Krav Maga, they're taught, practiced. Sounds like street-fighting? It is.

"There aren't any rules in Krav Maga except one: don't get hurt," says Ernie Kirk, owner of the busy Kirk's Martial Arts Academy in Kennett Square, where Jason also instructs. "This is about survival, so anything goes." Unimposing, though solid, Ernie wears glasses and is soft-spoken, evoking more his former school-teacher self, than a whup-meister who holds fourth-degree black belts in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, a black belt in Goju-Kai and advanced brown-belts in aikido and judo. But that's way it should be, since ordinary folks looking for practical self-defense aren't going to relate to a Van-Damme clone.

While Ernie lacks Jason's constant bulldog frenzy, his ferocity-coefficient turns on a dime. "Relax," he actually tells two students who are squaring off. "Lock into some stance, you're gonna be too focused on one thing, and something else is gonna hit you." A moment later he's hollering "Follow through!" stopping a roomful of paired punchers and grabbing one of them to demonstrate. "You don't stop at the head; you go past it, through it!" His fist whistles past the guy's ear. "This is for keeps, not for points."

For keeps. For real. That pretty well sums up where Krav Maga stands in relation to other martial arts disciplines. You won't find any "kata," grasshopper stances, leaping crescent-kicks and all that other choreographed, cinematic gee-whiz which everyone knows exists only for spectator value. Ernie, who was for years the first licensed Krav Maga instructor on the East Coast, acknowledges that a lot of the things he loves about martial arts would get him killed on the street: "There are inherent self-defense weaknesses of these other arts since they're geared to sport and competition." One may wonder how he's able to separate them in practice, considering that such a level of reflex leaves little time for thought. The street demands fight or flight, maim-or-be-maimed, no second thoughts. Whatever you do, you'd better mean it.

Thus there no competitions in Krav Maga. There are no "uniforms" either, and while there are belts awarded for proficiency levels, no one wears them. Most wear tees and sweat-pants along with wraps and other protective gear. Save for a ritual bow at the conclusion, the classes are informal and eclectic. One moment you'll be doing conditioning drills and calisthenics, the next, punching or kicking a pad held by a partner, then practicing escape from a particular hold or attack.

"Every move is based on your natural instincts," explains Katie Bevard, a tall, attractive former school-teacher (another teacher...today's school-kids must be a handful!) who instructs and manages at Kirk's full-time. "So you don't have to think about which of a dozen moves to use. If someone grabs you by the neck, your instinct is to grab his wrists. So we use that instinct -it's called a 'pluck-' (she demonstrates an abrupt grab-and-yank movement) and make it work as an escape. It works for anyone, from any direction. And it sets you up for counter-attack. All Krav Maga moves do that: one escape, multiple counters. Whatever you do must be instantaneous and followed by disabling strikes."

Since the moves are so simple, the learning curve is minimal. Unlike other martial arts where the beginner may spend months punching and kicking the air or performing stances and other seemingly pointless rituals before squaring off with an adversary, Krav Maga emphasizes contact from day one. Punches and kicks are delivered deliberately at an opponent's face, neck, groin...and stopped by a striking pad of one sort or another. The point is to remove inhibitions about such impolite exchanges. You can't just indicate delivering a throat-chop or a groinward kick...to make it automatic and instinctive, you have to experience delivering it.

Since there's no competitive hierarchy, Krav Maga classes democratize the learning process: at Kirks' you'll find neophytes pairing off with advanced, the instructors urging everyone to switch around and "experiment with different body-types." A beefy kid with a shaved head glares down at a slender woman old enough to be his mom: "I want that pencil! Gimmee that pencil!" He pounds on the pads she's holding. She recoils under his assault but continues to come back at him. A stress drill: the best way to condition yourself for physical confrontation is to indulge in it. Sometime later there's a stress/fatigue drill where one student, surrounded by four others, must kick and punch at their pads non-stop, while harassed from behind by yet another. All take turns in the middle, all finish exhausted, dripping, happy.

And sometimes bruised. Katie nods emphatically. "We turn out the lights occasionally and fight in the dark. You get tagged sometimes. We've all got bruises, scrapes, cuts. Nothing serious, but it's a great learning tool. Makes it real. Tae-Bo?" She snickers. "I remember that. Fun...good workout. But that's all it was. And you never got these..." She proudly shows off a bruise.

Is it any wonder that Krav Maga is taking the country by storm? Initially embraced by the military and law enforcement, it has caught the attention of the media and gone mainstream, helped in no small part by recent events. Ernie says that enrollment has increased some 35% in the Philadelphia area since 11 Sept, and he's adding new centers in South Philadelphia, Center City and Conshohocken. In many of the classes, women outnumber men. Teens and seniors joyfully swat and grapple with each other. Ernie's even been invited to teach Krav Maga at elementary schools.

Saturday, 1pm, Kirk's Martial Arts Academy: It's nearing the end of a three-hour seminar. One of Ernie's Philadelphia instructors is present, a petite 19-year-old Temple film-major named Greta who also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Though she's suffering a cold which has left her near groggy, Ernie repeatedly calls Greta to the front to demonstrate. She's something of a star at Kirk's -the other instructors rave about her- and Ernie likes to show her off. He unleashes a barrage of blows at her, rapid-fire from all directions and Greta parries them off with Lara Croft-like effortlessness and precision, an awesome display of reflexes which leaves little doubt she could seriously cramp a masher's style. Ernie lets her go and begins handing out rubber knives. "Ok, pair off! Knife-attack with wound simulation. Forget the movies -you will get wounded in a knife encounter. Guys, I apologize in advance to your wives and girlfriends. We're putting lipstick on these. And turning out the lights..."

Ernie's a funny guy too.

Desperate after a losing season, the team begins to give incentives to players in hopes of recruiting new talent. In the end, Pete Bell becomes disgusted in what his team has become and announces after a press conference about all the activities that have been going on and resigns as coach. Real life NBA players, Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway have key roles in this movie as well.

11.) Teen Wolf (1985)- This entertaining film stars Michael J. Fox as Scott Howard, who discovers that he has a family "curse" that allows him to become a werewolf. When he unexpectantly changes into the wolf during a game, he starts to become very popular among his peers and leads his basketball team from last to first place. Glory Road (2006)- This film is based on a true story dealing with the events leading to the 1966 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, in which the late Don Haskins, head coach of the Texas Western College led a team with an all-black starting lineup, a first in NCAA history. After seeing a video of a new prospect named Saleh, Jimmy travels to Africa and tries to persuade him to play for the school. Saleh is the chief's son and has his own responsibilities at home since the tribe's land is threatened by a mining company with their own basketball team. In the end, the tribe and the mining company face each other in a winner-take-all basketball match and Jimmy plays with the tribe.

White Men Can't Jump (1992)- This movie is the story of Billy Hoyle and Sidney Deane, white and black basketball players of the outdoor courts who team up together to hustle other street ballers who are under the assumption that Billy can't play because he is white. They team together for a two-on-two tournament and win the $5,000 dollar prize but Billy's gambling habits cause problems with his relationship with his girlfriend Gloria, who ends up leaving him. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes star as Billy and Sydney and Rosie Perez stars as Woody's girlfriend Gloria.

4.) The Basketball Diaries (1995)- This movie is a biopic of the life of Jim Carroll, a once promising star basketball player for his high school. His life starts to unravel as he becomes addicted to heroin and will go to great lengths to supply his habit, even going as far as stealing, robbing, and prostituting himself. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jim Carroll.

3.) Eddie (1996)- Whoopie Goldberg stars in this hilarious movie. During halftime of one game she is one of three fans chosen to take part in a publicity stunt where if she makes a free-throw shot she will get a chance to become an honorary coach, which she wins. Jackson is impressive as Ken Carter and also casts a young ensemble of future stars such as Channing Tatum and Rick Gonzalez.

1.) Semi-Pro (2008)- This is a hysterical movie from start to finish. It stars Will Ferrell as Jackie Moon, a singer who used the profits from his one hit single, "Love Me Sexy" to buy a basketball team from the American Basketball Association called the Flint Tropics where he is owner, head coach, and starting forward. The plot centers on the merger of the league into the NBA where only four teams from the ABA will be allowed into the NBA. Jackie proposes that the top four teams should be the ones to go to the NBA. VERMILLION BAY, ONTARIO (July 22, 2009) Josh Jacobs of Granite City, IL officially earned his musky stripes at the Great Muskie Men's annual trip to Canyon Lake in Vermillion Bay, Ontario. Up in Alabama (1844, Short Story)

Enrique Tapia came up to Ozark, Alabama in 1844 from Lima, Peru; he bought himself a restaurant from old man Ritt, the Banker in town; Enrique was a medium size fellow in height, with a large belly area, clean shaven and big hands. He was a good cook but didn't look much like a cook even with his apron on. He lived above the restaurant, and took his meals in the back, while his sixteen-year old daughter, Ximena took care of the customers; his wife had died early on during Ximena's formative years.

The younger Ritt, John, came into the restaurant often that first year they were in business, he liked the way Ximena looked, thought she was the neatest girl he'd have ever seen, and he always had a clean bright tie on when he came into visit the restaurant. even commented her on her legs He liked her face because it always had a smile on it, but he never thought about her otherwise.

Enrique, paid Mr. Hightower to have his slave Granny Mae, help him out occasionally at his restaurant, and Jordon, Josh Jefferson's son, who worked at the local grocery store, also came over that year to help clean the place, Jordon being in his mid-teens.

Ximena liked John somewhat. She liked the way he walked over from the bank and often went to the kitchen behind the counter, by the half doors to watch her make the food. She even commented on his ties. And she liked how white his teeth were, how clean he always looked, and he smiled, almost as much as she; he seemed well mannered and kept.

One day, he had come over early, and he found he liked her dark black hair, and her small arms, and tan copper skin, and he watched her wash up in the washbasin outside the restaurant, in the back of the building. But this made her feel funny; but he paid little attention to her feelings on the matter and just stared.

From the back of the restaurant, in the alleyway, you could see the Post Office, and the grocery store, the one Jordon worked for part time. And sometimes a wagon was hitched out in front of either building, or close by where the Bank was. Across the street was a small park, elm trees along side the road, the alleyway being sandy. This was farming country, plantation country. A church was down the road a bit. The restaurant was painted Green, called "Mamma Mea's," and the back end of he building faced a school.

All the time now, Ximena was thinking about John. He didn't seem to notice her as much as he first did though, and she noticed that also, and perhaps, just perchance, the enticed her even more. And when they did see each other they talked about the bank or restaurant business. In the evenings, John, if he worked late would walk on by the closed restaurant, talk to Ximena's father, Enrique, whom would be reading some old books, and its poetry and so forth, or the Ozark Paper, by a kerosene lamp he had sitting on a stool by him, on his porch, along the wooden side walk. Ximena would come downstairs, along side the building, join them, occasionally have to leave and go to the roof where they had two dogs and feed them and rush back down to her room, feed the puppy Rocco, then head on down another flight of stairs to see John, and her father, and he'd often times be gone.

It was John's birthday the 28th of July, and Ximena wanted to make him a cake, for when he came into restaurant, she'd surprise him with it, but was afraid to ask her father if he'd not mind, eggs and flour were expensive, and Peruvian's were quite conservative, and he really didn't like the idea she was seemingly chasing him, not him, her: otherwise it might have been alright.

And so the day came, his birthday, day, and she didn't make the cake, her father said no, and John ate breakfast, and then went out to the Hightower Plantation, to talk to Charles Hightower, to make a proposition on buying some of his back fields, some what he called loose acreage, he had over twelve-hundred acres. All the time, all that day, Ximena thought about him. It really was awful, while he was gone, not knowing he was over at the Bank, or coming for lunch (as she helped her father with the Peruvian dishes of food, ones that seemed to have become favorites with the clientele in town, such as: Lomo a lo pobre (rice, fried thin potatoes and beef strips, mixed together), Carapulcra, Pachamanca, a soup called Mondongo); matter-of-fact, he didn't show up for three days, and she couldn't sleep well from thinking of him. If she just dropped the subject of John it would be better, and that third night she had a dream.

In the morning of the forth day he, John had been gone, she saw John, coming down the road, on his horse, outside of the restaurant window, she became sick, felt weak, she busted out with tears, said,

"Papa, there's John, he's all right!" it seemed to her everything would now be fine, ok.

Enrique knew this was not a normal reaction that she had liked him much more than he had figured. He studied the situation at length, not saying anything for the moment, just sizing it up, watching, and deliberating within the vaults of his mind; looking at the expression on his daughters face, then onto John's.

Now John rode up to the bank, stopped and tied his horse to a post, walked over, across the street to the restaurant, the elm trees to his back, through the restaurant door he came dragging a sack. There were several men in the premises, with beards and long mustaches, and hunting cloths. Outside was a wagon full of boxes. Enrique, kissed his daughter on the cheek, told her to go in the back to do an inventory of what was needed for tomorrow's breakfast and lunch (kissing was a norm for the Peruvians, and the folk in Ozark was getting used of seeing this affection within this new café environment, although it was a strange custom at first).

"Hello Ximena," said John, before she got to the archway entrance to the back pantry.

She turned about, grinned, "What happened to you, I haven't seen you for four days?" remarked Ximena.

"Not a thing happened, I was out at the Hightower Plantation looking at his back lots, his fields, and I want to buy fifty-acres of it. You know what I'm talking about, it's where Jordon's father is, where Jordon lives when he is not working here or at the grocery story, his father's that old big nigger called Josh, he's kind of bullheaded if you know what I mean-my dad and him don't get along all that well, too bold for a nigger in these parts of the country-he says, but Charles puts up with him, not sure why. And I stayed with Charles Hightower and his family for those three nights, and we did a little hunting, snake hunting," said John.

She thought about what he said, about Jordon's father, then said, refraining from any other question on the matter, "Did you shoot them?" asked Ximena.

"No, isn't it a beauty?" he commented as he pulled a four foot dead rattlesnake out of a potato sack he had dragged into the café.

Ximena jumped back, somewhat frightened, her father looking,

"You got an inventory to do, don't you...?" he hollered, reminding her, if not asking her.

That evening, John came over to visit Enrique, brought a two gallon jug of homemade corn whisky over with him, bought it from Granny Mae, it was awkward to even lift and drink out of, and as such, they drank that night-sitting on the porch of the café, Ximena, by her father's side, John ended up pouring whisky down his shirt trying to hold onto that heavy jug, while Enrique smiled, and his daughter smiled, as Enrique drank his out of a glass-casually as if to be a good host, John took it right from the jug, as clumsy as it was.

"Well, Mr. Tapia, here's looking at you," and down went another big gulp of corn whisky, then he pulled up another potato back, he had it sitting on the edge of the wooden sidewalk, took out a six foot snake,

"Damn, big one haw?" he rhetorically, asked, looking at Enrique, who just stood there in dismay, confused at what his intentions were, thinking they were originally for his daughter, but perhaps they were just to have a drinking friend, to get drunk with, but he was not that accommodating friend.

"They taste good for a man to eat raw," said John, trying to straighten out the long dead slippery snake, and he started to take bite out of it, after cutting into its flesh, saying at the same time "It's good for what ails you, especially for potency!" (Then laughed like a hyena.)

Then he looked at Ximena, she was not laughing, nor was her father, and so he said, "How about another, drink?" and he took one.

It was obvious, John was feeling great.

Then John stepped back to talk to Ximena, thinking her father could not see what his intentions were, what he was about to do, try to do, and his small white hands went around Ximena's shoulders, she said quietly, "You mustn't," and moved a bit to her right, in back of her father's rocking chair.

But John didn't pay any attention to her, and his hand went back over her shoulders and an inch or two down her spine. It became obvious he wanted to do something, and she was getting frightened.

"Let's leave," John said to her, a statement not a question, because he stared to pull her his way.

"No, John," said Enrique, "she isn't going anywhere...."

"Oh it isn't right, I really like her," John said.

"Oh John, go home, go home," said Ximena, knowing her father was getting upset, and she also (John being in his late 20s, and Ximena, only sixteen, but that wasn't uncommon for a marriage to have taken place in at such an age, in those days, but it was a heavy scene for Ximena to see this man drunk, playing with snakes, and making her uncomfortable and cramped in the back by her father's chair; it was in, if anything, showing another side of John, one she didn't know, hardly expected, and didn't really want to put up with now, nor later on in life.

She, Ximena, tried to work her way out, from around him, and he, John wouldn't move, he tried to do something to her hair, then Enrique pulling himself out of the chair, pushing it in back of him, lifted and pinned his head-pushing it against the wooden wall of the restaurant, and shook it, and he rolled his head back and forth, and he started to cry, and she saw all this, and whatever she saw in him before, it was now all gone, a mist had come up, and unveiled the real person he was.

She walked to the side of the building, back up the stairs to her room, to where her puppy, Rocco, was sleeping, she wanted to cry, but couldn't, it was all so funny, and here a few hours before, it was all so serious.

"Rocco," she said, "please stay nice as you are!" Rocco stirred and curled up by her feet as she sat on her bed. She took off her shoes and leaned over to cover him up with a blanket, and did, along with tucking it under his belly, neatly and carefully. A cool breeze was coming through the slightly opened window, all the way from Main Street, and John, he was dragging his sack of snakes across the street to the bank, and then she shut the curtain.

Book Review - You On A Diet

It's that time of year again - when goal setting and dieting are synonymous and any of you who have weight loss on your mind can't possibly have missed Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz - they and their book seem to be everywhere - the book stores, the internet, the Discovery Channel and especially on Oprah. Oh and by the way, every-other Sunday afternoon you can watch an hour long program relating to this book on the Discovery Channel.

The main intention of You on a Diet is to make eating easy and automatic so that you never even realize that you're dieting. You on a diet is so named to be more of a mind and life change than an actual diet.

Roizen and Oz explain how and why your body stores calories, burns fat and reacts to the foods you test you body with. Ultimately, they give you a plan and formulas which they claim will help you lose up to two inches from your waist in two weeks on your way to your ideal size.

And notice they claim inches off the waist instead of pounds off the scale. The book goes into excellent detail as to why waist size is far more important to your health than your weight measurement on the scale [32.5 inches or less for women, 35 inches or less for men].

Further, they also make a great case for "If you don't understand it, you can't effectively conquer it" as emphasized in the following paragraph in Chapter 2 - The Science of Appetite:

"As much as an iPod bud in the ear, fat has become a regular part of our landscape. We see it everywhere. We see it tethered to a hunk of prime rib. We see it masquerading as a Nutter Butter. We see it crammed into evening gowns or cascading over belt buckles. We've seen paparazzi-haunted celebrities gain it and lose it, lose it and gain it. And, if we can bear a confidence-crushing six seconds of nudity in front of a mirror, most of us have seen our own share of flesh that droops, sags or jiggles. So, reason would tell you that we should know as much about fat as we know about Angelina Jolie's private life. But we don't."

What I like about this book is that the doctors really emphasize label reading (just like we've learned in our household with other consumer goods). Roizen and Oz explain why you should stay away from foods with ingredients such as High Fructose Corn Syrup, Enriched Flour, Trans Fats and foods with more than 4 grams per serving of simple sugars.

I also like the detailed information on how the body actually works and why we physically and physiologically eat as well as they address and diffuse many dieting myths.

What I don't like about it is that the suggestions can be a lot of changes all at once for a beginner but taken a little at a time can be fruitful.

And, even though Roizen and Oz give you a lot of detailed information which I personally liked, it is somewhat technical - I had to reread a couple of chapters to really comprehend what they were saying and I do a lot of reading about health.

Overall, I found the book to be interesting, informational, and the concepts really fit a healthy lifestyle and honestly, their approach makes more sense to me than any diet book I've read so far!

Under 6 years old: When you're going to the mall with preschoolers, the key is to shop early and to keep the trip short. Women's Guide to Helping Their Shy Guy - Is There a Problem?

We women want to support the men we care about, whether they're our sons, lovers, brothers or friends. Many of these men are shy with women. They find it hard to form romantic relationships with our gender, and we often don't know why. After all, we can see what great guys they are!

The hardest part for us is standing on the side-lines watching these sensitive souls being damaged by life. These shy guys are the ones that bullies make a bee line for. These guys are the ones who are the brunt of painful practical jokes. These guys think they're losers with a big L painted on their foreheads.

At least 1.5% of men, so a somewhat dated (1987) study tells us, are so shy they can't talk to women. They're uncomfortable even being around them. This 1.5%, somewhere in the region of 2 million men in the USA alone, never find love, never find companionship, and live their lives as shadows on the edges of 'normal' life. And this is just the extreme end of the continuum. There are many more men who are able to talk to women but feel their lives are damaged in other ways by their shyness

It's very likely that the percentage has increased since 1987. Why? Because technology means that kids are not getting the time to socialize with each other the way they used to. If kids don't get comfortable being with their peers, then they grow up to be adults who are uncomfortable being with their peers. And uncomfortable usually equates with shy.

The mothers amongst us watch our sons disappearing into the computer room after school, instead of heading out to play. They are playing. But not in the way that will help them to interact successfully in adulthood. Kids have to learn to 'play nice'. They have to learn about the unwritten rules of conduct that determine how well we can work as part of a team, whether at work or socially. How well we work as part of a romantic partnership.

Technology is the shy guy's refuge. He can meet his emotional needs by texting, twittering, or playing computer games, like World of Warcraft, with like-minded people all over the world. This is great. In the past, shy kids didn't have any way of meeting their emotional need for friendship. They were lonely and isolated. But it may be that many of those shy kids of the past forced themselves to get out in the world, because life was untenable otherwise.

For today's youth, life on your own is not so bad. And because it isn't, there isn't much pressure for them to push out of their comfort zone and socialize in person.

So, how do we help our shy friends, sons, and brothers? How do we get them to connect with others in a way that we know they need to? You can't nag them. You can't tell them there's something wrong with them, and they need to fix it. You can set them up on dates and hope they don't sabotage the event. You can't have sex with them (friends and lovers that is) and think that's going to help them get more confidence in their life.

John Gray noted a really basic difference between men and women in his 'Men are from Mars Women are from Venus'. He points out that men don't fix something unless they consider it broken, unlike women who are always improving themselves and their world in little ways. We don't do this because we're unhappy with whatever it is, we do it because we consider everything in life could do with a little 'brushing up'.

Men, like horses, can be led to water, but they can't be made to drink. They can't be made to do something about their shyness, about their social isolation, if THEY don't feel it's bad enough to need fixing.

If mothers, sisters or friends tell them to try something, they won't.

But we women are devious creatures. If we can't get them to do what we know is good for them the direct way, we can do it the indirect way. Think about it. How can you move the shy guys in your life toward what they need and want, without them being aware you're doing it?

Have you ever had an overwhelmingly trouble-filled day, where circumstances seem to be against you on all sides? Look in on young Prince Jonathan (son of King Saul) on just that kind of day. It is a known fact his boss who was his father had backslidden from God. His dad had counted only 600 soldiers left from his 3,000-member army. He had just gotten the news that three war parties were dispatched from the enemies' camp.

On top of those facts, the Philistines had banned blacksmiths in the land of Israel. Therefore, there was not a single sword or spear in the entire army of Israel that day, except his own and his father's. A day or so later, Prince Jonathan decided to go over to the enemy's camp with his armorbearer to spy out the camp. He did not tell anyone where they were going. After that, panic struck the entire Philistine army and at that same moment, a great earthquake came. The Philistines began killing each other in confusion. The Lord saved Israel that day through a man of God and his armorbearer.14

Have you been appointed to support someone in your leadership? Is your heart set toward helping this person accomplish their God-given tasks? If the answer is yes, then you are not alone. All over the Body of Christ, God continues to make specific appointments of helpers to assist His authorities. As an administration of the Helps ministry, He has uniquely formed the armorbearer's place in His support system. It is a part of His design for a team to strengthen His leaders.

Recently, I listened to a friend complain about a Church project using a well-used phrase, "There are too many chiefs and not enough Indians around here. It seems everyone wants to be in charge." My mind drifted as I thought, "How many times have I heard this complaint about various teams over the years. I thought about the need of understanding God's authority structure. It is not a new struggle nor is it isolated to the New Testament Church, as I considered Moses and Aaron's conflict with Israelite grumblers. They had complained against the leadership of Moses and especially Aaron saying, "We are all chosen and holy, who set you above all the Israelites?"

Under Old Testament law, judgment and destruction came to many of those who complained. God, in His mercy, approved Aaron's leadership with a budded, blossoming staff with ripe almonds hanging from it among the staffs that stayed the same. He then graciously reiterated the duties of the leaders and the supporters.1 It is a fact, not everyone is called to be a leader at the same time. Someone must lead and others must follow. From Scripture, we discovered God appoints leaders and those to support them.

When Jonathan is found on top of the hill spying out the enemy's camp, we don't have to look very far to find his helper. He was there with him. Scripture says Jonathan turned to his armorbearer and said, "Let's go up..." His assistant's response was, "Do all that is in your mind. For I am with you heart and soul." 2 Those words are music to any leader's ears, whether he is a weary church leader or a pastor needing an arm of support. I believe the Body of Christ needs those who will support the man or woman of God in a more tangible way. God is looking for people who will be with their assigned leader heart and soul.

With any ministry, gift, or talent God has entrusted us to use, we must develop it to reach its fullest potential. To develop the ministry of helping as an armorbearer, do this:

· Build relationship. Get to know whom you are serving. Relationship will guard you. For example, one key thing relationship will guard you against are the baits of Satan (offenses). When he comes to distort the truth about your authority, you can say, "I know this person there must be a reason for this." Your leader may do the same for you through relationship.

· Personalize your service. What one leader desires will be different from another. Each pastor or leader has a different set of gifts and needs of service than another. Learn what your leader's are and personalize your service. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. Be attentive to his promptings. He will teach you what works best for your authority.

· Be pure in your service. Make sure your service is to your leader's benefit. For example, a pastor friend of mine expressed her disappointment at the immaturity of her assistant. She explained, "My armorbearer insisted she come to my speaking engagement for support. I said great, and then she asked if I would pick her up, which was fine but on the way, I interpreted two dreams, counseled her, and prayed with her before arriving at the meeting. I was drained before I made it to the platform." I agreed with my friend's frustration regarding the assistant's lack of consideration for her need. Remember, there is a time and place for everything. Allow your concerns and needs to take a backseat to discerning your leader's need. God is faithful; as you plant seeds of excellent service in your leader's life, He will remember to take care of you.

· Wear Godly garments. Be careful of the attitude you wear when serving your leader. One of my team leaders says often, "I am careful of my attitude and mindset when I serve my leaders because whether I intend to or not I often transfer it to them. I don't want them to have to guard against receiving a bad attitude from me." If we strive to wear a garment of humility, kindness, and congeniality, our leaders may safely trust themselves to us.

· Develop loyalty in your ministry. Determine to be where your assigned leader is. Have you considered where Joshua was when Moses went up the mountain to receive the law of God? We can only assume he was somewhere close by because he was right there with him when he came off the mountain forty days later. Remember, how can your ministry to him or her be developed if you are not in place?

· Develop a watchful spirit. Jesus said to his assistants on the first night of his trial, "Watch and pray..." Yet, they were unable to stay awake to watch. He then gave us the key to a watchful spirit in His last words to them saying, "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." 13 If it is your hour of trial or your leader's hour of trial, determine to build your spirit so that you may remain alert and prayerful.

Our leaders are calling for us. They are looking for someone who will commit to the long-term. There are pastors and leaders who are weary in the fight because we have not taken our place. We must take our place as God appointed armorbearers, assistants, and helpers in His army. God will hold us accountable for the support that should have been given if that leader fails because of it.

A little about the characters and background of the aria: The name "Jubal" means "small stream" in Hebrew. The name also means "jubilee, or music." Jubal was Lamech's second son by Adah, of the line of Cain. He was the inventor of "the harp" (Heb. kinnor, properly "lyre") and "the organ" (Heb. I rise today to pay tribute to US Army Sergeant Joshua M. Hardt of Applegate, California. He is one of the fallen heroes of the Battle of Kamdesh -- the remote outpost that was besieged and surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered by more than 300 Taliban insurgents on October 3rd.
